Hey so i got a 870 express. i swapped the bird tube for a used short one. i'm shooting 2 3/4 slugs and after the shot the action is open (slide back) this ain't right but still witht he slide back there isn't a shell popped out of the mag tube on the lifter thing. so to reload you close the bolt and then open close again to get another shell down the pipe.

Has this happened to anybody else. i've never had a problem with this gun before. it does get real wet and torn down and put back together. i carry it for grizz defense working on coastal streams so it get's worked.

Any advice from those with this kind of experience or some shotgun technoperson would be greatly appreciated.

my next gun will be a police model

Thanks

dude i shoot lots. it's not me it's the gun. seems like the action is not locking shut properly and the action is being jarred open by the blast.

The locking block isn't engaging into the barrel's locking block notch.

Try chambering a cartridge assertively. There may be some fitting needed with the short barrel.

LOL you just described what I'm experiencing...

Are you shooting ONE HANDED? I assume you are since the blast is throwing the bolt back. What is happening is that the shells in the tube are sliding forward with the recoil and getting hung up on the right latch (the one to prevent all the shells coming out at once); this is why you need to cycle twice.

If you hold the forend while shooting the problem will dissappear.

I'm anal though and want to know that if I shoot it one handed, the next shell will appear... I've ordered a 40" Wolff Mag Tube spring that is to be custom fit - This should have enough power to compensate for the recoil and keep the shells in place during recoil.

You by chance don't have a SpecOps stock installed as well do you?

Cheers~

easy x2. you may even have a burr or simply crud that's causing the locking block to not lock into the notch. try to clean with some solvent with an old tooth brush or q-tip

If the bolt's locking lug was not engaging the barrel extension, the bolt would be blown violently open. Sounds as if the action release isn't functionning properly.

Thanks tiriaq and easy. i thought it might have something to do with the action not biting the barrel right. I'll double check my action release as well. might of ####ed it up last teardown, though i can't see how cuz i'm gentle

I'll check the barrel ends where it enters the reciever to see if there is a difference between the 2 tubes.

Hey all others. the weapon is clean. no crud getting things mucked up. it get's soaked in the bush and then taken apart and dried and cleaned and reassembled regularly

Also please note i wasn't shooting one handed or doing any other stupid dangerous types of haywire things. that's kid stuff.

Thanks for all your advice

THe other thing is that when the action shut with a round in the pipe it stays shut when yanking on slide. When i shut the action (unloaded) and tap the butt on the ground pretty hard it stays shut. the gun otherwise functions as per normal.

The 870 is pretty simple... if the action stays shut with one in the pipe, I fail to see how it can be blowing back after each shot with you holding the forend; is this correct? It's violently blasting your hand and bolt backwards after each shot??

Something is broken; it sounds like the lug-recess on your short barrel is missing or the lug is broken/missing (but since you don't have this problem with your long barrel - the short barrel is suspect.)

The shell not coming out is a side-result of the above problem. The violent recoil is causing the shells in the tube to slide forward and get hung up on the latch.

Can you post pictures of the short barrel (where the bolt locks)?
