It is possible to install a new style barrel (barrel without detent ball mecanism) on a old style 870 ? My shotgun is an old style and i can't figure it out how to install a new style barrel. I already spend money to get mag cap but it for old style, does'nt fit. Thanks.

They are not new style barrels, they are the Express type. The detent on the barrel ring is still used on Wingmasters, Police Magnums and some others that come from the factory with magaizne extensions.

Any of the express barrels can have the barrel ring drilled and a detent installed. I have done lots of them.

If I understand you right, you have a Wingmaster reciever and an Express Barrel?

All you have to do is pruchase an express magazine cap to go with the barrel. Its what I did for my wifes Wingmaster, and it works perfectly. I think the caps costs about $8

Hi, my shotgun is a 870 Tactical with +2 extension and the barrel is a Dominion Arms 12.5''. The Express cap work only with dimple on the magazine i think, mine don't have the dimple.

I mean, you still need the detent and not just put a plate on it.

And as in the many suggestions above of putting washers, rings, loctite and the like instead of doing it the way it was designed and has worked well that way for past 60 years.

Sure, they will all work but so would winding a chunk of baling wire around it.

I am not here to offend anyone, just to suggest the right way to do something.

I have a 1987 Express and it has the ball detent 28" barrel and mag cap. I recently bought a 23" express barrel for it without the ball detent and it still works absolutely fine.

Is the Wingmaster mag cap shorter than the Express?

The Wingmaster, Police Magnum etc have small detent dimples in the outer rim of the mag cap. The Express type used ridges inside the dome of the cap to engage on the plastic mag spring retainers.

Both caps screw onto either mag tube. Sure it works fine but there is nothing to stop the mag cap from unscrewing except for friction. The detents are what "locks" the cap so it does not unscrew by intelf.

How much does it cost to have the detent installed?

In my experience, even the detent doesn't stop the mag cap or extension from eventually coming lose.
