I have a 1970's vintage Rem 870 Police magnum. The gun has a 14 inch barrel with bead sight.
My questions are

1 With a 14 inch barrel this gun is restricted?

2 I noticed a few 18 inch barrels on EE these will fit on this 870?

3 Didn't see any on EE but what is the value of this 14 inch barrel?

Cheers and Thanks Dave

1. No, unless the whole rifle is under 26 inches. How the hell did you get your pal?
2. Yes, as long as they are for rem 870, should be ok
3. Value depends on condition of the barrel

1 No
2 Yes
3 Depends. I've seen $250-390 in the last few years. $390 sold fast but it was brand new take off.

Some are blued (harder to find than parkerized - I would pay more for blued)
Some are 2.75 chamber only. (not a deal breaker, but I like 3" as an option)
Some are cylinder choke (I prefer the ones that cam fixed mod or improved)

Factor in condition do some plus/minus calculation based on features and price accordingly.

"...fit on this 870..." There are several aftermarket 870 barrel makers. Most of which will cost you less than a barrel with Remington stamped on it. About $100 less, depending on the barrel. Gobles has 'em. Bought a rifle sighted barrel there(in London) a few years back that cost me a bit over $200 including taxes.

1: If you put on a pistol grip or certain kinds of folding stocks, yes.

2: 870 barrels now come in two non-compatible configurations. The ones that came on 870s with the one-piece 6-rd magazine tube will not fit yours. I think your receiver will also only handle 2 3/4 shells, so the 3" chamber detail is not a concern. Unless you have your ejector restaked to accommodate 3" shells.

3: Tough to say. Is it original? Or is it a home cut job? Screw-in choke?

It's restricted if the barrel WAS 18+ inches and was cut to 14 or if it was manufactured as a 14 inch barrel. If its a manufactured 14 inch it's fine. If it was cut below 18.5 inches it becomes restricted.

The other limitation is overall length. Even if the barrel is a factory 14 inch, if the guns overall length is less than 26 inches it, again, becomes restricted.

Thanks all for the info. Still fine the Canadian regulations on firearms to be a bit confusing. For one I did know about the 26 inch rule but from my looking around their are firearms that are NR and under 26 inches (correct me if I am wrong) Rossi Ranch hand 24 inches and Armed Sash12 46 cm 19 inches.

The barrel I have is the original Remington Parkerized 14 inch bead sight 2.75 or 3.0.

Now how do you tell the choke by looking at it

Cheers and Thanks

as long as you can prove its a factory 14 ' your good to go, so many people have been busted for chopping them down.
proof marks will tell you.

Regs are a mess. Limit for home-cutting semi-auto shotgun barrel is 18.5", pump is 18.0". Make sense? Not so much! IF a long gun (designed to be operated with two hands) is manufactured under 26" overall, it is not restricted (Ranch Hand, super short shotguns, etc.).

Ahh thank you for the clarification.

there will be a stamp telling you the choke. It will be cyl, mod, or imp. It's a small little stamping, but it WILL be there if it is a remington barrel

Thanks JP ill check tomorrow, I did notice some stamps on it were it fits into the receiver.

Cheers Dave
