870 or Mossburg 500

All are very similar, the 870 being more durable than the newer Mossburg 500's and Benellis in my experience, though both the latter are great guns. The biggest clincher on what pump shotgun became my #1 was accessories available. Just picked up my Dlask 12.5" barrel for instance, can swap back to 26" with the screw of a cap anytime. Side saddles, different stocks, spare parts are all easier to come by than other models as well. Quite simply, it's the most aftermarket supported and though arguable besides the 500, most proven pump on the market. I will applaud whatever you buy though, this is really a discussion of modest (though real in my opinion) advantages.

FYI: Mossberg makes the barrels for remington 870's

Also a tacticool short barrel shot gun is not a skeet or trap gun a long mag does nothing when you only load 1-2 shells when shooting either trap or skeet and most regs state you cant have anymore then 3 shells in the gun while hunting.

I have a mossberg 535ats with 24'' rifled barrel and 28'' vent rib with interchangeable chokes use full for trap IM or M or skeet for shooting skeet and use a XXfull for turkey...

Makes not a spit of difference who makes the barrels, we're talking about the merits of designs. Short barrels not useful? You're not from from west... When I'm in the out west here or up north, a 12.5" 4+1 870's a very nice thing to have in the tent. ;)

I don't shoot clays, like most shotgun owners don't. I hunt birds, with my 26" vent rib, and use it for defence, with the 12.5" barrel (which shoots clays well actually, given I have it with interchangeable rem chokes).

I own a Mossburg 500 too, with a shot barrel and a rifled barrel, but I don't use it. Good gun, the 870's just more versatile for me.

...just looked into that claim, you are partly right about Mossberg making 870 barrels, but it appears they do not make the factory 870 barrels, which Remington does. Mossberg does manufacture spare barrels for the 870 on a component basis. If I'm wrong, please provide the info, but a google search yielded a bunch of information on this seeming to show Remington does indeed make their own barrels.

This is going to come down to a personal choice, try to get your hands on both,as ether would be a good choice.I have Mossbergs,a 590,and a 930,[you should take a look at that one as well] ,and my buddy has a remmy 870.

IMHO,the mossberg is a tougher gun [they did pass the U.S Army testing, something like 3000rds torture test.] but its never going to be as smooth a action as a well worn 870.

my post was replying to the gent who started the thread not you Ardent.....

If you care to read the first post in this thread you would have read this
I want to mainly use it for Skeet and Trap at the Range and just learning to shoot

his main use will be trap and skeet so a short barrel gun should be the last choice 26-30'' is what he needs with interchangeable chokes. If he wants a bush gun which he doesnt say he wants a bush gun then maybe look at the mossberg 2 barrel combo with 22'' and 28''vr's.........

Yes, new model 870s have the Rem Chokes (interchangeable). Gonna want the set most likely, especially if you're shooting clays. I'd look to pick up Skeet, IC, Mod, and Full. There's a $50 Remington kit that comes with IC and Full +speed wrench (wrench is a gimmick), a Mod isn't included as one comes in the gun. My Mossburg did have a few chokes with it, check and see, maybe they still come with the fixings and would be a better value for you in that case.
