I just recieved a brand new 870 police. It has the walnut stocks, bead site and parkerized finish. It has the U cut in the lifter piece on the bottom.

I have not fed it real ammo but i have these anodized aluminum 12gauge snap cap dud shells.

When i cycle these it seems to want to send two shells from the magazine port at the same time and this causes a jam up. I cant cycle through it and have to use a screw driver to push the second shell back into the magazine so that I can cycle the first shell.

Any idea what causes this on a brand new gun???

that is what i was thinking. I am not to keen on cycling live ammo in my house if it may jam up on me.

I will have to take it to the range and try it out.

What's happening is that the shell stop(s) is letting more than the 1 round slip by onto the feed ramp. If you carefull look at the underside of your gun, where you insert dummy rounds into the mag tube AND then slowly bring the pump rearward... You will be able to watch the carrier and bolt touch that shell stop and cause it to be pushed out of the way, allowing a shell to be released onto the feed ramp.

My guess is there is nothing wrong with your gun, I'd second RePete and say it's the snap caps causing you the trouble.

DON'T be playing with live ammo to check this out, you need a trip to the range or other safe place to discharge live ammo and test your gun.

Cheers

I always go to the range for live ammo. Hopefully that is all that is the problem.

Any recommended snap caps or dummy shells? The ones I have are a-zoom. The plan was eventually to take the wife to the range and train her on the gun. I was going to start by training her at home with dummy rounds. I need something that cycles though.

I like her to know her way around the gun before we go near the range.

I've made mine by loading up some birdshot and wad. The primer is hot glue. No powder.

I would expect it is the dummy rounds, not the gun. It looks like this?

Are they the maroon colored A-zoom aluminum ones? Those have a smaller diameter rim and are very prone to double feeding, in fact I use them specifically for training in the double feed failure. If you are worried try a different brand or take it to the range an duse live ammo and see if the problem goes away.
BTW: The correct remedy is 'PUSH, PINCH, PULL" (use this information at your own risk and observe all firearm safety rules)
First flip the gun over so the carrier is facing upward and with your offside hand grip the forestock and PUSH it firmly forward, then PINCH and hold the carrier into the upward position to pinch the round. While maintining pressure on the carrier PULL the forestock back. This will create about 1/4" of space betwee the 2 rounds and now you can tilt the ejection port downwards and the rearmost round will fall out (it may take a bit of jiggling). Now you are back in business (unless you have loaded that next round backward or put in a Bic lighter by mistake). With practice it should take about 5 seconds to clear

That is exactly what it looks like and the A-zooms are exactly as you describe.

On the plus side i can train on clearing a jam. On the negative side i will have to pick up another brand of snaps.

Had exactly the same issue with some aluminum snap caps; they're both shorter and lighter than regular shells, and that I think is what causes them to double feed.

870 Police models have super strong mag springs compared to standard hunting models. The lightness of your caps coupled with the heavy spring is very likely the problem. The second cap gets past the shell stop before it can seal off the mag. The reason for the heavy spring is because with a full mag (4 rounds) some officers were quick enough pumping that with the normal spring the 4 rounds were still forward with the effect of recoil interia and unable to exit the mag. The heavy spring overrides the effect of inertia and allows the gun to cycle as it should. I have witnessed this with a standard mag spring and have accused the officer of short stroking the gun. (I am a shotgun instructor) Found out later that the gun's spring had been replaced with a spring from a game warden's express model during disassembly drills and training.

cheers Darryl

And I bet most people would "FIX" that by stretching the mag spring :puke: (Good way to wreck the spring) Another thing I have seen is people put a +2 extension and then use the factory mag spring again and wonder why it doesn't feed properly.

Well i did get some of those plastic snap caps to try. On the plus side they do not jam like the aluminum ones. however it wont lock closed sometimes on those when i push the slide forward. At least these i can cycle.

I will have to make some home made dummies when i get to the range.

Those 870's sure have a nice racking sound. It kind of reverberates through the whole house.
