870 question

I'd be more concerned with the data stamp on the barrel.

Keep in mind that a 3 inch shell will fit and fire in a 2 3/4 chamber, just not safely!!!!!!!! The crimped part of the hull needs room to open, and it ain't cut in a 2 3/4 shell.

My 3" bbl is clearly stamped to only fire 3" shells in "magnum receivers." Just not 100% certain if that is still the case, or if other receivers can fire 3" shells safely.

According to the Remington website the magnum receivers (3") have a serial number ending with the letter M as in #########M
If there is a different letter it is not a magnum receiver. That is just what Remington says anyway

That said all three of mine say Magnum on the receivers...Go figure,
"Express Magnum"
"Wingmaster Magnum"
"Magnum"

Cheers

The barrel and receiver design determines what can be shot from the Model 870. All barrels are clearly marked with chamber information located about half way down, opposite the ejection port. Receivers are marked with letters at the end of the serial number that determine ejection size.

The following is true for all Model 870 shotguns:

V -- 12ga -- 2 3/4" Only
M -- 12ga -- 2 3/4" or 3" Only
A -- 12ga -- 2 3/4", 3", or 3 1/2"
W -- 16ga -- 2 3/4" Only
K, X -- 20ga -- 2 3/4" Only
U, N -- 20ga -- 2 3/4" or 3" Only
J -- 28ga -- 2 3/4" Only
H -- .410cal -- 2 1/2" or 3"

Regards.

Thanks Easy. Answers my question - the serial number has a V at the end. So what is the difference between the 3" and 2 3/4" receivers? The ejection port is the same size.

The ejector is different. You can have a new ejector installed in your "V" (non-magnum) type receiver and provided that you have a 3" chambered barrel, you will be off to the races. The major drawback is that because the ejector is riveted to the receiver, you would have to get it refinished for the conversion not to show.

what you need for sure is a 3'' barrel.

AFAIK the only difference between the old 2 3/4" receivers and the 3 inchers is the ejector is a little shorter so it sits farther back (to allow for the longer shell ie the shell travels a little farther before it hits the ejector) . Don't beleive Remington stocks the 2 3/4" ejectors any more) As suggested above, if you replace the ejector and use a 3" barrel, you're OK.

(edited because i wrote some of this before seeing the second page  )
