So I bought a tactical 870.
I want to cut the mag tube down to regular length.
What type of die do I need to rethread it?
And then where would I find such a tool?
I want to cut it cause most barrels don’t fit the long tube.
I figure I can always put an extension on to get the mag count back up.
Any advice, knowledge, or link is appreciated!

Thanks

too the best of my knowledge .... Mag tube is installed by rem and is there for life .... tube is too thin to rethread

if you want a longer or shorter mag tube buy a receiver with the mag tube length you want

PS you can add a mag tube extension that just screws in instead of the cap

I’d expect mag tube threads are roll pressed and not cut, it’s probably cheaper to buy a new shotgun than to remove and shorten yours. You could call tacord or Dlask and see what is involved, it’s not a diy job I’d expect l. The mag tube on the 870’s are soldered or brazed in from what I understand.

A spacer could be made so that other barrels could be used. I believe Remington made one.

I’d listen to just having some fun and sell it and buy one with a normal length tube if that’s what you want. It will end up costing you more having a gunsmith install a new one and getting it refinished. Someone will want the longer one and may have a normal Express to trade.

Mag tube threads are cut and I have cut tubes and threaded them to get MCS length mag tubes so that the MCS 10" barrels will work.
I also have made a sleeve to go over the mag tubes so that the tactical length mag tube can be used with standard barrels. You will also have a one piece tube instead of putting a mag extenson on it.
Matt D. contact me in the shop tomorrow if you want to go that route.
