Sorry for the double post. I have an 870 SPS Super mag. Camo 23" cantilever barrel (smoothbore). I was hoping someone might have a favourite slug load they might like to share. Help save a nutz shoulder a bit of grief.
 
Most guys will suggest you go with the Brenneke slugs.

My gun likes the standard el cheapo Winchester one ounce slugs, puts three into three inches at a hundred quite regularly. (12 ga 2 3/4") That is with a smoothbore barrel and a scope.

And these slugs have killed dozens of deer for me.

I've tried a bunch. Mostly the major mfg. foster type slugs but also the Brenneke, Fiocchi, Challenger and a couple of gimmick type others. Ironically, the cheapest of the lot, Winchester silver box 1 oz slugs seem the best. I get about a 4" group at 100yards with my Rem.870 express smoothbore.

So it's a smooth bore with a Rem choke. I misunderstood ... from your description, I thought it was all smootbore like the old school slug bbls.

Why not use a rifled choke tube and shoot sabots?

Yes I would like to try a rifled choke tube. What's the Remington one like? Or are there better ones out there?

BIGREDD is the local slug gun guru. He would be better to ask.

I just got my bbl and haven't tried it yet. We don't have a special SG season here in NB. I was planning on maybe sometime heading back home (Ont.) and using it then.

Thanks SuperCub. I bought this one strictly as a turkey - deer gun. Hope to try it out next weekend.

Read all the packaging. Some of the sabots are for fully rifled barrels only.

Ammo is more important then choke maker. Try a fed different one and see which shoot better in your shot gun.

Middle picture third from the left, that type is what I found works best in my Choke tube gun

870/slugs

I just bought a Carlson rifled choke tube for my Win.1200 deer barrel to try.
Before that I was using Brenneke slugs with good results,but trying to find a steady supplier was a downfall so I switched to Win. 1oz. 2 3/4" fosters which my barrel seems to like. I am also trying out Federal 3" Power Shock slugs which shoot great,but hit hard on both ends.

Win64, You should buy a rifled tube for your Cantilever smooth bore barrel, barrel and use "Remington BuckHammer" slugs. The longer the rifled choke tube the better, they are all about 1:35 ROT but the added length adds stability to any slug you use. The Carlson Tubes are good performers and there are many other after market tubes out there as well.
 
The BuckHammers do work OK in fully Rifled barrels but the Remington Core Lockt Ultras are abetter option.
The Buck Hammers really shine when using a rifled tube... I have found nothing better for combined accuracy and hitting power with a rifled tube.
