870, slugs, and red dot sight?

Ok, so I just ordered a Remington 870 with ghost ring sights.

I am interested in installing a red dot onto the receiver ... but, I am not sure if accuracy will be "good".

Basically I would love to shoot slugs out of the 18 inch smooth bore barrel with a red dot and up to lets say 70 - 100 meters.

But the barrel of an 870 is not fixed to the receiver ... so there is some movement ... I mean you take down the gun and clean it and put the barrel back on ... and your zero has shifted slightly ... right?

Now I am wondering if this "play" is negligible for what I am intending to do with the shotgun .... or if it will have an impact on accuracy?

Has anybody any experience with this?
Has anybody mounted a red dot on an 870?
If yes, whats your experience?
What kind of accuracy do you get?

Input? Thoughts?
 
I honestly think you'll be just fine accuracy wise with just the ghost ring sights at those distances.

I have a Benelli Nova with ghost ring sights ... and at 50 meters I can't keep the slugs on a paper plate size target ....
Meaning, I am out of hunting range with that setup ..

I guess my eyes are getting older ... :-(

+1 too this^^^

Start with the ghost ring at the range you're aiming at, if accuracy is on point with slugs go for the red dot. I put one on my Fabarm and I like it. I'm shooting accurately out to 80 yrds with slugs with it.

thy did make a cantilever barrel with choke tubes for turkeys and deer but you may have trouble finding one...I have been watching for one myself. .Dutch
 
I use an 870 smooth bore with trijicon rmr dual illuminated 7moa Amber dot.
I can shoot 3 inch groups out to 100. Tighter at 75. Standard Winchester 2 3/4 slugs.
That's fine for what I do with it.

If you are set on the red dot (I use one on my crossbow and it's the cat's tail for deer at shorter range), then you can simply go with a saddle mount and throw the scope on that.

At your stated range (max 100) EVEN IF there is a hair of barrel movement you should still easily be able to get 2 or 3 MOA which is way more than you need for Bambi at that distance.

We are talking shotgunning deer here - it's never going to be a "precision rifle" - you put a slug "anywhere" in the boiler area of a deer at 100 or less and it is not going to go very far.

I am curious how did you mount the red dot on the 870? Did you drill and tap the receiver?

Would you have a picture?
 
I mounted with a cheap saddle mount from eBay forget the kind. Works great.
Pm me your email and I'll send you some pics. Couldn't be happier with the rmr because after deer season I can switch it to my mini 14. Super light weight and very good dot in light of low light. Didn't really buy it for night ops lol. But the tritium works well.

I used this mount made by Weaver. It is rock solid. There's plenty of other mounts that are similar.

Some 870's already come drilled and tapped.

I had a Norinco 870 clone and a Rem 870 D&T for a Weaver rail product to permit mounting red dot sights.
I use the Rem 870 Monte Carlo synthetic stock with these to get the correct comb height.
