I handled a 12ga at Epps some months ago. The short bbl 20/22"? was ported....imagine the muzzle blast!

Overall, seemed nice to shoulder/swing even though I'm not really used to pump actions. For me, the drop in the stock lent to better handling as compared to a 12ga (and far heavier) BPS Upland Special that I also looked at during the visit.

I think a WM 20ga version with a 24/25in bbl (if such length was produced at the time) would be a nice find.

I have a 12g version that the previous owner installed Wingmaster wood on, instead of the straight stock.

It's a very handy little upland gun. 21" VR barrel, which the previous owner had thinwall chokes installed.

The action is the smoothest 870 I've ever operated (I've owned over 25 - various models).

The only downside is that the mag tube is slightly shorter, so standard 870 barrels do NOT fit. That being said, if I needed a different length barrel, I wouldn't have the Special Field model! :)

i have one with the english stock . i should say had as my daughter since getting her licence has become the proud owner of said gun . the earlier models were fixed choke and later versions have screw in chokes .they were produced for about five years before being discontinued . they are a light gun in comparison to other 870 shotguns . the short mag tube and short barrel is were the weight is lost . they are the equivalent of a wingmaster in quality .beautiful guns in my opinion and a bit hard to find

just lovely, I love short guns. that model is in 12ga
I purchased a 20ga youth model some years back to get an upland pump, short barrel in 20ga.
I'm using one of those slide on butt stock extenders to make up the LOP.
I wonder if there are any 22" barrels that will fit a 12ga Winchester 1200 2 3/4 "?

Got an 1100 Special Field. I Bought it in the 80's when they first came out. It has accounted for a lot of game, rabbit, woodcock, grouse, the odd duck, and even a deer. It's not meant for heavy loads or slugs, because they are too hard on the gun, but in a pinch it will do.

I had a Special Field as well. I was very proficient with it. Quick. Though, I found myself always using my old English BLE Side x Each.

If you can locate a 20 gauge, or fortunate to pick-up a 28 gauge, I'm sure you would be pleased with the selection. IMO.
