What is the significance of the word "special" on a Remington 870 reciever ?

That is the "Special Field" model. They made them for a few years in 12 and 20 ga. Short barrel and straight stalk. 3" chamber with remchokes. I think the barrels are 21". The Special Field barrels are not interchangeable with other 870's.

Special meant that it had an English stock (no pistol grip but straight) and IIRC they only held 3 in the mag.

They were a nice little field gun.

The mag tube is 1 rd shorter, therefore the barrel ring is farther back.

This will mean that the spring is also a special length...and if I install an extension, like a Wilson or Vang, the spring will be too long.

Is there any special way that a spring should be cut.....

I'm not really interested in having an extension...I just want to change the spring and follower....

Tube's one round shorter eh! Hmm....So if ordered a replacement magazine tube + mcs forend/action bars + custom 9" barrel from Dlask= :D :D :D

You can't get a new tube unless you send it to Remington for replacement. They are furnace brazed or silver soldered into place.

I have an 870 Special Field, but it's NOT a straight stock. Older one though, around mid 80's production.

Nice little gun. Light, fast handling, and lighter than a standard 870 (shorter mag tube, as mentioned).

Mine has a 21" barrel as well...perfect length for upland, IMHO.

The stock on yours has been changed because they all came with English stocks.

Hmmm..... well, could be, I guess, but I always assumed it came that way from the factory.

There is a little duck/bird on the bottom of the pistol grip cap... was this ever stock on any 870's?

Yes, common on older 870's. Your stock has been changed.

There is a sweet 20 ga special field in excellent condition at Accuracy Plus, unfortunately the stock has been shortened.
