I just got a new 870 Express but I don't like the laminate stock and fore-end, so they're coming off. Question: Do I need a special tool to remove the fore-end tube nut? Also, (I'm sure it's been covered before, but), if someone could point me to detailed instructions on how to change the stock and fore-end, I'd appreciate it. Thanks nutz.

I just got a Hogue overmolded stock set for it and I may or may not sell the laminate set. The wider stock will fit my hand better and it looks cool :D Do you know where I can find detailed instructions on how to change the stock and fore-end?

I just use a set of needle nose pliers. You just have to be careful and take your time but it works.

There is a tool which all gunsmiths will have and most serious gun people may have as well, to remove the forend nut very easily.

Thanks, guys. That tool would be good to have, but spending $50 on something I'll only use once probably doesn't make much sense (I can buy more ammo). I'll improvise something.

The needle nose plier thing can work, especially if not too tight. I've also seen some aftermarket forends come with a piece of flat steel which will engage the nuts...if the mag tube can be gotten out of the way it's then easy...not sure how to remove the tube though, probably not a good idea.
You don't want to scratch up the bluing on your gun to save a few bucks. Let's say a gunsmith will swap your forend for 5 bucks mar free...it only takes seconds to do.

Why would you remove the mag tube? Just take the forend assembly off the gun for easy access to the forend nut.

The tool is simply a flat piece of steel as wide as the forend nut and as thick as the slots cut in the nut. I lucked into one from wicked_police but you should be able to make one quite easily. Just take the forend assembly into your local Home Depot and tell them you need something that fits in there and will engage that slot.

I had hoped this would be easy, but... I got the fore-end nut off (small victory), now I can't get the fore-end itself to come off. I tried pulling it, lightly twisting it, and tapping it with a rubber mallet, but nothing. I don't want to damage it by just hauling on it, so I'm lost. Any thoughts?
