I bought a new 870 supermag 3.5" and its jamming right after a shot. The slide wont move at all unless you really muscle it. I have heard of this before and headspacing and extractor problems are what im told. Now I was shooting cheapo Winchestor traps which someone said that they are crap and jam in every gun.(except all my buddies!!!!) Now I want this thing to shoot any shell. Like it should. Any info would be great. Thanks.

Same gun. NIB. Shooting Winchester trap loads. Identical problem. Swiched shells and ceased to jam up. It still shoots the trap loads nowadays. If I were you I would break it in some more with some quality loads and then try a them again. Chances are it was a bad lot of shells. It was in my case anyhow.

my regualar 870 express was doing this as well. In my case I found that the bolt would tend to get caught up in the carrier. I polished it with a water stone then switched it into another 870 and there is no more problem. I thing the Quality is starting to suck with the newer 870's. My first express was excellent out of the box.

I have the exact same gun (870 express super mag), and the exact same problem. I've only put maybe 20 - 30 shells at the absolute most through the gun but without fail the stupid thing will Jam, HOW DO WE FIX THIS???!!!???
Oh and I've tried about 5 different loads through the gun different brands too.

Now I'm a bit new to all of this (I'm used to dealing with bolt action rifles) so doc, how exactly do I do the fix you're talking about?

mine did it and i just shot it and shot it and shot it
lots of 2 3/4 loads and then went to 3 1/2 and no more probs
i think it just needed a good break in

870 jammin'

It does seem to be ammo related. The cheapo crap does jam and the Federal does not( 3" mags) However the cheap stuff does not jam in my buddys guns. Ithica and mossberg ??? I think that very lightly polishing the chamber in the barrel might do it. The cheap shells expand to much at the base. Still a little pissed though. I thought this thing would be a shell eater but it seems to have more expensive tastes  . It still is the best base to build from so whatever. Pass the beernuts.

after 4 or 5 hard shooting skeet sesions where i would jam a rod down the barrel my wingmaster will shoot AND eject any thing i throw at it
be patient and shoot it lots it gets better

Don't shoot the winchester with the silver at the bottem of the shells. I had the same problem. I can shoot anything other then Winchester.

Unfortunately I found not all shells will feed reliably in my guns.

I was amazed at the huge difference in reliability between loads, shell lengths and manufacturers, so I bought a bunch of boxes of each type that are heavily stocked in my area so I could test them.

Once I found out which ones fed like butter I relaxed and could start to concentrate on accuracy. For example with slugs, 2.75" Winchester and Remington 3" slugs both feed very well; and for buckshot, 3" Supreme Winchester shells feed the smoothest.

There is just too many different materials and tolerences in shells to expect them all to feed smoothly. On the plus side, your firearm will get a good breaking in by the time you find out which ammo it likes. I'm gonna see if I can wear out an 870 by the time I get too old to remember where I put it.:D

The most horrendous jam that ever occurred to me was with a similar Remington Model 870 Super Mag; I was lining up on three perfectly positioned Canada Geese, fired one round (folding the centremost bird) and then jammed the gun while cycling for the second shot. Needless to say, I was pissed, as the other two birds flew away while I fumbled with the gun. I literally had to take the gun apart and use a plyers to get the empty shell out.

This was no cheap ammo I was using either; Remington 3-1/2" Nitro-Steel Mag (BBB). I got rid of the gun the next day, got myself a Remington 11-87 Super Mag and never looked back since!
