My new 870 supermag jams after a shot. Not every shot but common enough. You really have to muscle it to cycle the slide. I have been told headspacing and extractor problems. Anyone heard of this ? Before I send it to be fixxed. It was jamming with cheap shells but it should shoot anything.
Thanks.

I have noticed in the past, but not to this severity, that the steel based shotshells have a habit of taking more muscle to get fed. When I first got my 870 almost 20 years ago, I had a similar probelm, but it was due to the forend warping and pushing aginast the barrel; a bit of sandpaper and it was good as new.

I have the synthetic hardware on it but I will check that out.

The brass on the empties is likely expanding. The chamber needs to be polished. Could be some small burr as well.

I'm having the same problem with my 870 Express 3", which was new when purchased.... BUT, only with my 26"VR barrel... With the 20" tube, it was flawless. The gun is actually in the shop right now, while they try to figure out what the problem is.

Will advise when I get an answer. Unfortunately, I waited too long to try out my long barrel, and it is out of warranty period.

About one shell out of five would be problematic: The pump would come rearwards about an inch, the bolt would unlock, but then it felt like the fired hull was really stuck in the chamber. Some rounds I actually had to hold the shotgun by the pump and drive the butt into the ground to get it open.

And yes, I did clean thoroughly before firing, and saw no obvious flaw in the chamber!

if you are usin winchester cheapo shells i would blame those. i bought one of those cheapo 100 round boxes from canadian tire 2 years ago. out of 5-6 shots, 3 were hard to extract. to get the fourth out i had to jam a stick down the barrel:mad:

brass was splitting....

ive neevr had any problems with the cheapo federal packs of 100 or any other shell...

I am using Federal and Winchester Supreme shells and I have the same problem. 870 Express Super Magnum synthetic purchased last fall. After about every 5th shot I get a fail to extract. I am using a layout blind and have to hold the slide and bang the butt stock on the ground to get them out. Very annoying. How do I polish the chamber??

Thanks!

I was told to use steel wool on the chamber. I am going to try 1000 grit sandpaper and go very easy, and test fire often to see if it works. There has been enough reply to this thread that Im going to contact Remington and see if we can get a rebate on these guns. This is a common problem with the super mag, Google it an you will see. I will post any info I get.

My buddies 870 supermag is having a problem lifting the next shell into the chamber on the forward motion of the pump, but only when using 3.5" shells (winchester supreme). I suspect it has a weak spring or something like that as he has no troubles when he uses 3" or 2.75" shells.

Also having problem with mine, after firing slide is open about .75" and the shell is difficult to extract. Not banging against the ground difficult though. Am using 2.75" super x slugs.

I had the same problem in a new 870 supermag, and after many attempts to stop the jamming by different shells/gunsmithing/$$ I solved the problem right away by simply buying a Mossberg 535.

Now that you mention the feed issue, I also have been having issues with what one might say is a double feed. I get one half way down the chamber and the other out of the tube and above the tray that lifts it into the chamber. I forget exactly what was happening as it was usually in a hurry and I wanted to clear it and start over. It may have been when trying to eject shels to change from 3.5's to lighter loads when a fl;ock of ducks was approaching. I forget. I'm going out in the morning so I will let you know. ;) We should limit out in a couple of hours. Oh yeah, and now that I sold my HK handgun, I am definitely getting the Benell, but I'm importing it from the US to save about $300. I'm bringing in a youth Model 7 in 6.8 SPC at the same time. No one has them here. Fun, fun.

Numerous online complaints of 3.5" supermag feed problems caused me to go to 3" when I shopped for an 870. Besides polishing the chamber all I heard from people is try find a brand of ammo that doesn't stick. I had lots of stickiness with white box cheap-o winchester bird shot in 3", so I don't buy 'em anymore.

In regards to a double-feed, people say it's always because of a short-stroke or too slow of a pump. One time it happened to me because I didn't push the last shell far enough into the mag. The good thing was I was able to rack her hard and she cleared for me. The second time it happened to me was because I was trying to check the action post-cleaning with a snap cap that was too short to properly cycle. Buying proper-length snap caps fixed that. People claim most issues can be cleared with a hard rack if you have the newer flexi-tab remington sg's, but I'll see as time goes on if this is true.

Nothing yet.

I have sent 2 emails tto Remington and nothing. They say 1 to 2 days for a reply. its been 4. I said that a rebate should be offered on these guns or a buy back. I will keep on this and post as the info comes.

Several years ago, I bought an 870 Super Mag Synthetic; the first time I took it out hunting, 3 geese made a picture perfect attempt to land into my dekes. I fired at the first and folded it, then the gun jammed while ejecting the round. Needless to say, I was pissed! It took about a half an hour of prying with a pliers and taking the gun apart to get the shell out.

These were no cheap shells - they were Remington Nitro Mags, 3-1/2" BBB. The following week, I got rid of the gun and got myself a Remington 11-87 Super Mag, and haven't had a single problem with it yet. I haven't touched a Rem Express model since.:dancingbanana:

I bought my new 870 Super Mag Combo in April. Grouse season in Ont was my first chance to try it in the field. Bass Pro had a sale on 2.75 Winchester SuperX for $1.99 a box. The first shell jammed in the chamber after it fired. I had to bang the butt on my knee to get the action to eject the cartridge. The second one did the same. Long story short... 9 boxes later and I still couldn't get the weapon to eject right.
Friend handed me Rem Waterfowl 3". Same thing happened.
Got a cheap box of KENT from local gun shop and they seem to work 99% of the time. I've had the REM gunsmith bore out the barrel and it hasn't seemed to fix the issue. I've fired several hundred rounds through the 28" inch vent rib barrel and still no joy.

BTW, the rifled deer barrel works flawlessley! It's the darn barrels in the Super Mag. Rem seems to have an issue they don't want to admit to.

My latest remedy.... looking at getting a Mossberg 935. Rem has lost it's luster in my eyes.

Still love my Winchester .300 WSM and my Marlin 336C 30-30!

Hope this helps insofar as you don't feel so alone in this problem.
