I bought this gun a little while ago. The Remington 3.5" supermag.
When I first took it out we were all shooting cheap Winchester crap shells.
Now out of 4 shotguns mine was the only one to jam with the shells.

The Winchester shells have thin enough brass that they expand in the chamber when shot.
So I figured that it was a shell snob and bought better ammo. I was still pi$$ed that every other shotgun had no problems. Better ammo " seemed "
to cure the problem.
So like a fool I bought a 14" Dlask barrel, put a sling on it and thought, job well done !.
So I go out the other day and it starts jamming again, but with preimium ammo. It was also loading a shell when a loaded shell was already in the chamber. It would also grab a shell from the feed tube and spit it out the side. I couldn't load a shell in the feed tube, they went in 3/4 of the way and then got stuck. I would pump the slide and sometimes it wouldnt fire. So I tried dry firing it a few times, Sure as $hi! it wouldnt fire unless you really slammed the slide back and forward.
I have emailed, faxed, called Remington. They could give a crap about me or the " MANY " other people who have bought this junky, waste of time and money gun.
So now I want to send it to a Gunsmith. I am looking for a really good shotgun
Gunsmith that is located in B.C. , However I would send this gun to the moon if someone could fix it.
I need this gun to function perfectly. It is my bear gun. I need to trust it with my life.

Give Peter Riedel in Mission a call 604-302-6176.

If you are in a hurry for a good, reliable, short barrel shotgun for bear defense, sell your DLASK barrel and buy an HP9-1 from Marstar for $349.

My 14" barrel is enroute to Peter to get fitted for chokes right now! Can't vouch for the work yet, but he has better communication that any other smith I've dealt with!

His current lead time - 1 week to 10 days! I don't think you'll find another smith with such a short wait time.

What's the cost for threading for chokes? Are they remchokes as well?

"...first took it out..." Did you clean it first?
"...preimium(sic) ammo..." Ammo applies to semi's, but a pump should feed nearly anything. There's no gases, etc involved to cause the action not to work.
"...couldn't load a shell in..." Sounds like a burr on the mag follower. Maybe a damaged or incorrect mag spring. Although crud inside the action will do that too.
"...loading a shell when a loaded shell was already in the chamber...." How? Pump guns don't do anything unless the shooter cycles the action.
My old 870 feeds the cheap ammo I used for years in Rolling Thunder and plate shoots.

Who doesnt clean and lube there guns after they have bought them ?
Actually ammo DOES apply to all guns, even a pump. Jamming supermags with cheap ammo are very common.
And thats what I meant, " When I cycle the action " it will not properly eject the spent shell, so the new shell jams up against the spent one.
And I dont care if your old shotgun feeds cheap ammo, MINE DOESNT !

I had the same jamming issues with my 870 mag when I tried some cheap heavy steel stuff...went back to the winchester ammo and no problems. I would be interested too in the cause/remedy for this.

I will do a follow up post on this when my gun is fixed. When I first posted on this I was amazed at how many people were having the same problem.

Yeah, I feel for anyone who gets suckered into thinking an Express model is the same as Wingmaster or Police model - there are significant differences.

My Remington Police 3" action couldn't jam...I could feed it anything at all including the cheapo shells and it was as smooth as silk. If the 3 1/2" guns are that unreliable I wouldn't want to trust my life to one.

The problems which happened twice were with some real cheap crap shells a hunting buddy bought...never a problem with any other shells. Needless to say he got the rest of his shells back after that.

Hopefully not out of the muzzle...;) :D

Just to pipe in here:

I have an 870 Super Mag as well, and it does have the same prob. with the cheapo wallymart shells. Its about 6 years old.

I was at the club this past weekend, where another shooter bought a new 870 SuperMag and he was having major probs with his, with the cheapo shells. If you took one of the unfired shells and ran the rim through the ejection port it would not fit, a couple of thou oversized on the shell rim. The said shell did not have the same problem in mine, whereas it did not get stuck while pushing it back and forth through the ejection port.

It seems to me that there are three different issues with the cheap ammo and the 870 Super Mags:

1: the cheap aluminum rims expand when fired and get stuck in the chamber, whereby I have had to bang the butt on the ground while holding the slide to eject a spent casing.

2: The rims of the cheapo shells are over sized already and the ejection port on the new 870's are smaller. We are going to put calipers on them this weekend to see if there is an appresciable difference in the ejection port openings.

3: I think the chambers on the 870 Super Mags are cut under sized compared to other shotguns, contributing to the ejection issues.

All this has led me to use decent shells for the Sporting Clays that I do, I usually am stocked up on the Kent Target loads, and have never experienced these problems with said shells.

I am not worried anymore about the " free fix " on this gun. If I am going to keep this gun I want it to go to the best shotgun smith. Because this was going to be my backup bear gun. So this gun has to function perfectly.

I have been considering a marlin 45-70,since I did have one before and really liked it, but I will see how the 870 does when it comes back.
I will also post the repair breakdown when it comes back.

Biggerair;
I have the same issue with an 870 Super-Mag Combo that I bought last year. The "el-cheapo" Winchester Super-X 2 3/4" shells load into the mag fine, and chamber fine, but once I fire the first one, it jams in the barrel. The only way to get it out is to safety the weapon, manually load it, unscrew the barrel and knock out the spent round with a stick! One of my hunting buddies has a 20 year old 870 that has no issue with these rounds! Go figure.

I've sent my shotgun into a Reminton repair center TWICE and the last time they told me they can't find any problems with it. I have 3 hunting partners who disagree!.

Mind you, upon using the Kent brand, in 3", it doesn't seem to have the problem to the same frequency. It may only jam oneout of 10 instead of EVERY shell.

My plan is to get a couple of boxes of 3 1/2" Magnum shells, and shoot the hell outta this gun. If, ,by the end of 2 boxes of shell, it still exhibits this problem, it will become a stand up reading lamp!

I've already got it's replacement. I picked up a Beretta 3" 391 (for myself at X-mas!). That's my new "Bird" gun now, so the 870 would sit 99% anyway!

I've resigned myself to the fact that Remington just doesn't care about the "small" Canadian market as much, and can't be bothered to address our issues.

Good luck with yours, and happy hunting.

The truth of the matter is that the low end Remington stuff is GARBAGE !
I should have bought a Norinco 12 guage and been done with it. I still am curious " why " such a difference between the supermag and the wingmaster?
A pump shotgun is the most simplistic design on earth short of a single shot, and they have screwed it up.
I will never own anything remington again. I have given them enough money and time. And we are talking guns here not toasters. If that gun failed in the field it could be fatal. I do not know what it will take for remington to wake up over this issue.
If you Google this topic, supermag problems, many sites come up.
So Im going to take one more stab at this gun. If that fails I will then sell it for a Mossberg.
