870 Supermag=Superproblems.

My new 3" Wingmaster operates flawlessly with the cheap Winchester ammo. About 500 rds through it so far - many more with the spring trap shooting season coming into full swing.

The truth of the matter is that the low end Remington stuff is GARBAGE !
I should have bought a Norinco 12 guage and been done with it. I still am curious " why " such a difference between the supermag and the wingmaster?
A pump shotgun is the most simplistic design on earth short of a single shot, and they have screwed it up.

You get what you pay for - "built down to a price" is what the Express/Mossberg 500 market is. For the most part, I stay away from new guns these days. Find yourself a 2nd hand Wingmaster if you can't justify the price of a new one.

If David Henry says it is likely a tight headspace issue, ....he would know and I would listen to him cause he is one of the best smiths around and I believe he is the rem warranty smith.

Sounds like a tight chamber, compounded by out of spec cheap shells. My brother had the same problem with his new 3.5" SuperMag.

I'm a big fan of Remington products, espcially the Model 870 pump gun and the Model 700 bolt gun, but I have to say I've noticed a decrease in the quality & quality control of Remington products built over the past 6-7 years. Maybe they're cutting too many corners in order to compete price wise with the cheaper Mossberg & Savage products out there?

Canadian warranty repair work does leave much to be desired. I know this from personal experience, as does my brother.

That said, I still prefer my 700s and 870s to just about any other gun on the market....and I own over a dozen of them! For the most part, I choose to purchase well kept, previously owned firearms over new production. However, the new models I have purchased, including their LVSF & tactical rifles have demonstated good overall quality and excellent out of box reliability and accuracy.

I have an 870 express; I think it's the exact same gun as a Wingmaster, albeit cheaper finish...I doubt the Wingmaster action is made any better.

I have heard a lot about the 3.5" guns being reluctant to feed 3" and 2 3/4" shells reliably.

I am a 870 fan. I own several. I purchased a brand new (recent production) 16 bore Wingmaster. It had to be sent back for tuning 3 times. The slide rails had to be tweaked, the extractor had to be re-cut and the shell stops had to be tweaked. It is now GONE. I recently purchased an express 20 bore combo (with slug bbl) it will cycle and shoot anything without a hitch. The smooth bore slug bbl shoots 3" groups at 50 yards with Brenneke slugs. The above supports the argument that the difference between a 870 Wingmaster and a 870 express is who built it and how much care they took. Quality control is Remington's biggest problem right now. (in my opinion)

cheers Darryl

Thanks for that report - I guess I'm lucky I got a good one. My wife works in quality control. No quality program short of inspecting every gun is going to catch every glitch. You are not going to see that type of QC in any sub $2000 gun IMO. If your stats say your QC program is 99% effective, one out of a hundred guns may have a defect.

I don't have contacts from within Remington, but the tolerances for dimensions and finish are higher for the Wingmaster. Logic dictates that the failure rate will be less.

I wonder about " you get what you pay for ". I went with a remington 870 because of the quality. If you ask around the 870 is the most reliable shotgun you can own.
The supermag is not the same gun. With the money I spent on the supermag, I should have bought a Mossberg or a Norinco. So if I had bought a Mossberg 500, I would have got what I payed for. A cheaper shotgun that shoots anything and has a good record for reliability.
I look back and laugh at this because my gut feeling was go with a Mossberg, but the salesmen said no way they are garbage !   I am also in sales, and if a customer feels burned by a certain brand they will most likely never buy that brand again and will also tell all there friends what they went through.

There is pretty much no issues with either Rem 870's or Mossy 500's. They have been made for decades it comes down to personal preference and what you want to do with the shotty.

You want accessories? 870 far surpasses the 500 in aftermarket. You want cheap and reliable, most mossbergs are still going strong after decades of use and abuse and are super affordable. I have a couple Mossy 500's and I like them because they all fit me perfect from the factory.

I find that most shotguns are pretty good stock these days. The supermag 870 does have its problems though.

I bought a 870 3" express last fall and it works even with the cheap shells and i've never heard of anybody having problems with them feeding or ejecting shells at all except for the supermag feeding complaints and thats why i didn't spend the extra $30 for the 3.5 inch chamber. It would of been nice to have but i figure it has some bugs to be worked out and didn't want to be the one to do it.

I had a no fire problem with my 870 super express, the sear spring broke and the sear wouldn't engage the hammer .Pud at Bashaw sports fixed it while I waited...
