OK, here's one for the experts.

I've got a Remington brand name 20" improved cylinder rifle sighted deer bbl (not rifled). Problem is the little ball detent that the cap clicks against at some time got frozen (rusty spring maybe?) and over time the bearing wore down to nothing from removing and installing the bbl nut. (this happened before I got the gun).

So now I can just hand-tighten the bbl nut and there is no click detent to prevent it from loosening.

I haven't shot the gun with this bbl yet, should I be concerned that it will loosten up and the bbl may launch downrange?

Is there any easy fix to secure the bbl nut by some other means?

I'm told I can convert the gun to the newer style bbl nut by punching detents into the mag tube, but that will stop me from being able to install a mag extension in the future.

Anyone got any ideas?

i have had this as well- put some clear nail polish, or a very THIN amount of white glue on the thread
alternately, you can put white glue after the cap is on, around the edge

Send or take your barrel to a gunsmith to have a new spring and ball installed or buy a new barrel.....

Soak the detent with a penetrating oil for a couple of days, then with a SMALL ball pein hammer and a 3/16 punch gentlt tap the ball, and try to9 free it up.

RePete.

Ok, well I'm definitely not buying a new barrel. Aside from the worn out detent the rest of the bbl is like new. I soaked it 2 days in penetrating oil and tapped the detent. It pushed in slightly but didn't come back up at all.

I showed it to my gunsmith and he said the detent it not removeable. It's crimped in place and would need to be drilled out to remove it, but due to the location you would need about a 2 foot drill bit to reach it, so that's not practical.

Basically I can either shoot it as-is and see if it stays tight, or use some other means to keep things locked tight.

How does the bbl stay snug when people use a mag extension? What about on newer Remingtons that don't have the ball detent? I know they are secured using a fitting held into the mag tube by a detent punched into the mag wall. When guys drill those out to use mag extensions, how do they keep those barrels on tight?
