I'm looking for a 20 gauge shotgun for a female friend. The two I'm considering are the:

-Mossberg 500 PERSUADER SPECIAL PURPOSE; and
-Remington 870 EXPRESS 2-SHOT w/ KNOXX SPECOPS STOCK

I've never owned or fired either, so I'm looking for opinions. I'm also open to suggestions that I haven't considered. Were looking for something that isn't too huge or heavy, but most important of all is that stoppages are rare.

Thanks for the input,

J.

-are you a lefty?
-do you ever plan on putting a pistol grip butt stock on the gun?

She is right handed, and the 870 I mentioned has a A2 syle butt stock on it, and a pistol grip. I thought that might be more comfortable for her, but it is not necessary either.

I just poked around on the Wholesale sports website to see what was available in a 20ga, 18.5" or less. I just wanted to get some opinions on what I should look for before I go checking out all the other sites. I wouldn't mind going as short as a 14" barrell.

Dsiwy asks very valid questions you should answer to help in your decision.

But also, are you set on 20 gauge? If you are worried about recoil, birdshot and low recoil rounds with a 12 gauge are manageable with proper technique and I would rather go that way due to the availability (in terms of variety and price) of 12 gauge VS 20 gauge

Thanks for the help Dsiwy. The 870 seems to be the defacto scattergun in terms of trust after doing some reading around the site.

Not completely set on the 20ga. And yes, recoil was my main concern as my
12ga rocks my shoulder pretty good after not many rounds and she is not very big. Maybe I'll pick up some low recoil rounds and run some tests with my own shotty. I have a stevens 350 pump security, but I have found it to be unreliable with certain types of ammo, and it's also quite heavy.

Ya, definitely give it a try... that is the best way to find out for sure.

In my experience, there is not a lot of 20 gauge ammo available and it's about the same price as 12 gauge.

As for recoil, a female friend of mine (I'm not 100% but I would say about 5'3"-5'5" and she can't be more than 120 pounds so she's not tiny but she's not big in any way except the boob area) recently got a shotgun, DA Grizzly (so an 870 clone) with a 12.5 inch barrel, and she is able to handle standard loads just fine as long as she remembers proper technique. Wow, that sounded kinda dirty. I honestly think unless your friend is super tiny, 12 gauge with reduced recoil rounds, a good quality recoil pad, and proper technique will be just fine. But again, make sure you go and give it a try because everyone is different. Good luck
