870 vs 590A1

You need to do a little more reading. Remington did not even enter a shotgun in those trials. So, Mossberg basically won by acclamation. That said, I use/carry a Remington everyday, and I think it is great, but I think that Mossberg has a few features that are better - and visa versa for that matter.

I know, I know...someone said it is the old Ford vs Chevy chestnut...but hey, if youve got it-flaunt it!

I need to go be by myself with this pic. Yowza

Mossberg's fit me best....

I still can't figure out the difference between a 500 and a 590. It has nothing to do with barrel length, ammo capacity, sights, or any other accessories. Both can come in any arrangement you desire.

So what the heck is the difference between the two? Is one made of steel and one made of polymer? They both look exactly the same to me.

IIRC...the main diff is the heavy bbl and parkerized finish on the 590. The 590A1 includes an alloy trigger guard vs polymer.
The 590 can be had with speedfeed stocks and may not be an option for the 500.

Primarily the difference between the 500 and the 590 is in how the barrel is retained. The 500 uses a short bolt which runs through a barrel lug, then screws into the front of the magazine tube; where the 590 has the more familiar barrel ring which slips around the magazine tube and is held in place with a threaded magazine cap. The threaded magazine cap allows access to both ends of the magazine, where the 500 is a problem to clean if it cannot be unscrewed from the receiver; it seems that some can be unscrewed from the receiver while others cannot. The 590 also has a built in bayonet mount. The receiver is the same in both models.
