Just bought a 870 wingmaster that is freaking amazing. Just what I wanted, and got it for $300! I've been blasting clay out of the sky to my heart's content. I think it'll be great for birds this fall.

The only problem is it's an older "30 full choke barrel, and I want to shoot some slugs and buckshot. Can the full handle those rounds? I'd also like a shorter barrel to bring out paddling/camping for some fun.

Anyone have a good place to get a REASONABLY PRICED blued (wingmaster)barrel? It would be great to have the option to switch chokes.

Thanks.

They're on the EE all the time. I bought an 18 1/2" Remington take off barrel from Dlask last year for $80. He may still have them, I don't think he uses the barrels for his builds.

The full choke will safely handle buckshot and slugs, but may not be the best for patterning and accuracy. I would recommend having a gunsmith ream out the choke to modified, as I think this is a better all-around choke and this would allow you to use steel shot if you take it waterfowling.

As far as short barrels go, the 20" smoothbore Wingmaster Deer barrel seems like a good setup:
-rifle sights
-choke tubes
-a +3 magazine extension will fit flush

Make sure you stay away from the Express barrels. Besides having a matte finish, they have no ball detent on the barrel lug to hold the magazine endcap (or extension) on. the Express uses a different, cheaper method to retain the endcap.

Not true! I have a 20", smooth bore express barrel, complete with crappy express finish and non remchoke improved cylinder choke and open rifle sights, and it does have the ball detent. The origina barrel does rely indeed on an even crappier system to hang onto the mag-cap, but my tacstar +3 mag extension locks very well onto this 20" barrel.

By the way, this barrel gives me 3 touching holes at 50mt with Rem rifled slugs, either magnum or max dram. I haven't tried the new controlled recoil ones. Buckshot are a waste of time and money, though.
