Hello All
I am looking for my first shotgun and after a fair bit of searching and reading I have narrowed down my search to a wingmaster my question comes down to which year and shell sizes should I get, should I go for 3" or will 2 3/4 be just fine. Should I hold out for a vent rib or not as I said I am a newb so any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks Toothy

If anyone has one they are thinking of selling fling me a PM

Like Maple Leaf says, unless you tell us what you're using it for, there's little we can say.

I picked up a 1970s vintage Wingmaster with plain stock, plain barrel with bead, 2.75" chamber and full choke for $125. I all I did was shoot at a trap range once in a while and hunt jackrabbits in open fields, I probably wouldn't need anything else. Most upland game however is best shot with a modified, improved cylinder or cylinder choke, and since steel shot doesn't do too well in older, full choked guns, you need a more open choke or at least a shotgun with choke tubes for waterfowl.

While the Express line is reasonably reliable, comes in 3" chambers, with ventilated rib barrels and Remchoke, the older field versions of the wingmaster are made with the same steel and milling process as the current Wingmasters, but usually with fixed choke, plain wood and plain barrels. You get better quality with the older guns, but might have to bore out the chokes or get another shotgun for certain uses.

If you explain what you want to do with it, many answers will be forthcoming from other posters on the board.

Regards,

Frank

Thanks for the comments so far. I would like to use it for Trap at the range. grouse and waterfowl. It would just be a general shot gun for the moment but if I liked one discipline over another I would be happy to get a more specific gun later.

Get a new wingmaster with choke tubes. then you got the best of both worlds. 23/4 for trap and 3 inch for your duck hunting. with choke tubes you dont need to worry about steel shot just put in the right choke.

So how long have the wingmasters been available with changable chokes is it a recent thing or have they been available for a while. Do I have any chance finding one second hand or am I stuck with brand new I guess i could buy a used one and buy a new barrel but I suspect that I wont be far off the price of a new one if I go that way. Your thoughts are appreciated.

You are talking about the #1 selling shotgun of all time.... there are tons out there! Downside is they don't seem to be sold on the EE as often as their cheaper cousins, the Express. Keep some cash in your bank account and your eye on the EE and you will get a good used one before long.
Then you can take it out of the safe at night and sit there petting it saying ....... 'my precious!' :D ;)
