870 won't keep shells in mag tube...

Its an old 870, been around the block a few dozen times. When cycling the action fast, I observed double feeds. At least 4 times, out of just 50 rds. Meaning, the pump would not slide back forward...looking in the port, see that two shells are in the action, preventing it from operation. Clearing the top round away, it would continue operating just fine.

What I believe is occurring, is the shell latches are releasing the first shell to cycle properly...but during fast cycling, it is releasing a second shell into the action.

Now...I believe this indicates the need to replace both shell latches, as they are either worn, weak, or somehow out of spec.

My question is: do you agree with my conclusion about the cause? Do you agree with my corrective solution?

Have you looked at the spring for deformities? It could be bending/binding inside the tube causing weak tension.

Check the action bars aren't sprung inwards or out. They are what actuate the shell latches.

Slow cycle the action and watch what happens as the cuts on the action bars engage the shell latches. It should be pretty obvious if this is a problem.

I think it's most likely the case that the cuts in the receiver that the shell latches sit in are fouled, in combination with old shell latches not having the same "spring" that they used to. I'd try a complete teardown, cleaning, and reassembly before replacing any parts.

I'd give it a really good bath first too. It's the 'only during fast cycling' that is key. Suggests it's not necessarily a worn part problem.

Actually, it suggest that it is a worn part problem....check the shell latch..... It is held in place by the trigger assembly pins and may be damaged worn or need bent back into shape...... It is the piece that is farthest right middle in this pic....
