87gr Vmax for smaller Deer in 6mm

whats peoples experience with this little Vmax, 87gr 6mm?
ive been told some pretty good things about it especially at only moderate speed- but i know some of you will have used it a bit in some form of 6mm !

let me hear your thoughts on this for smaller deer eg whitetail / fallow deer.

I have shot the 87gr Vmax out of my 6mm CM for coyotes but would never entertain the thought of using it on even the smallest deer or antelope, it's a varmint bullet designed for rapid expansion muchthe way nosler's varmint ballistic tip bullets are, chances are they would blow up on the rib cage with very little or no penetration.

Nope, don’t use varmint bullets on game!

If that 6x47 won’t stabilize Speer 85’s don’t expect the 87 V-max’s to do any better! They are longer than the Speer’s.

I somehow think your 6x47 ain’t the 1 in 10 twist you think/wish it is…….. seldom were they built with that fast of twist, being they were purpose built for the most part as a target set up…. For sh!ts and giggles try some 65’s or 75’s in it and see if those will shoot….. if those perform you’ve solved you conundrum…..

100% this.

I have considered trying 30 cal 125gr Ballistic Tips on deer but there are stories out of there of them being just too explosive terminally. Maybe they will be OK, maybe not. Varmint bullets are just not a good idea on game animals.

I love the 70gr Nosler Ballistic Tip in my 6BR. They are absolute hell on gophers.

Varrmint bullets tent to rivet on bones.. id bet you would be fine in between the ribs but those are terrible odds for hunting game ethically.. huge selection of better bullets available in 6mm.
fast barnes and cx hornady bullets would be my first choice. Then bonded cup and bore bullets

I must have had wires crossed on another bullet that's been claimed as a ripper. Might be the interlock 87gr ! An mate reminded me a Speer 90gr maybe it was.

Nevermind, I'll keep the 87s for the other critters of smaller sizes.


Twist rate seems to be stabilising 100gr alright, just the seating depths- and load charges havnt been gelling until recently.
Also seeing if it's the BTSP it dislikes as FB 75s are money
I'm fairly sure Its a 1:10

It's go to load is 75 fbhp , havnt tried lighter.

Getting somewhere with 100gr lately and trying some different Bases in the 87 and 100 bullets coming.

The bro I bought from did the Cleaning rod and measurement an came back to me with 1:10... So there may be some operator error , I've not got a .243 jigger to twist up properly but in due time I'll get one .

So far ,it's all good.

Copy on the varmint bulletz , I've no doubt it "would" work but I was mixed up with another bullet it seems!
