8MM-06 & 8X64s hunting rifle projects/build >Update<

Another two actions that have come to mind is the m70. It comes with several features I like. Decent stock design, 3 position safety, CRF action. It would be an easy route.

Tikka could be another option. Ease of finding parts/stocks.

So many options.......question is, do i want to build a rifle with classic lines or a modern style hunting rifle.......:confused:

nice build and a nice idea for another
Having the barrel instead of rechambering opens the options
going traditional means finding sights?

The barrel is quite heavy. I was thinking about banded front sight and barrel band but it might look funny on such a barrel.

I have an 8mm-06AI, it is a significantly different cartridge than the 8x57 it used to be. I had an extra Husqvarna FN M98 8x57 in the gun safe not doing anything, the conversion was very inexpensive. I picked up a 30-06AI reamer on CGN several years ago, it worked perfectly. While your planned 8x64 project sounds interesting, I think the performance will be so close to the 8mm-06 that it may be a redundant build.

Back in the late 60's Sam Elliott in Calgary converted more than one 8mm rifle to 8mm x .308 Norma Mag. A very potent round. Sam preferred doing this on Brno 8 x 57 rifles and he did a superb conversion including quality French Walnut restocking.

At this point in my hobby of guns, nothing is practical. I just enjoy playing or building new things. While true, there's not much to gain, with the 26" barrel I should see 50-60fps more than my 24" 8mm-06. I have also been sitting on Dies and several boxes of 8x64s ammo. I also look at the 8x64 being a classic (Circa 1912). It's much more appealing to me.

I think that caliber is ment to be made I to a classic looking stalking rifle!! But I’m a sucker for the wood/blue combination with classic lines!

Had a change of plans. I'll keep the barrel for another time. I picked up a couple Brno's in 8x64 and had Mitch Kendall full length bed them and decelerator butt pads put on. Highly recommend his work.

Had the zg 47 at the range and it looks promising. This was with factory ammo, now that I have some brass I plan on loading up either 180gr TSX at 2850-2900 fps or 200s at 2700.

Nice work Daniel. I have shot a few whitetail with my old 8mm/06. Bearhunter sent me a die to assist with reloading for it. I don't try for any great speed. I used good old 47SB Higginson powder under an ordinary Sierra 150 gr. One being the front leg and the heart and lungs are done.

I wouldn't want to post a pic of my ugly old setup. I'd probably get tarred and feather on here! :p

Did you ever get the HC up and running?

I did, it's set up with 2-7x32 Bushnell elite and 165gr Speer SP at 2800+ fps. Have to take it out for a hunt soon.
That's great. I have taken a couple dozen animals with mine... it is very pleasant to shoot and has proven effective on game... I have been sticking with 180's in it although I started with 165's. NBT & Speer Hot-Cor, and when I took it to Africa I loaded the 180 TTSX.
