Is there such a thing:confused:
I have a type 99 (Ithink) Toyo Kogyo ,K in a circle, 31st run.what I thought was a 7.7.I bought a box of Hornady 7.7 Jap and it won't chamber.6.5 jap is way to short.Then I discovered I could drop a .320 diameter ball down the barrel but not a .323 - 8mm bullet.
What do I have?

I suppose it is possible that the rifle could have been converted to 8mm in China, where 8mm was more or less standard. You might want to do a chamber cast. Don't even think about shooting it until you know exactly what caliber it is, and even then, you want to make sure that the rifle is sound. There were 6.5 Japanese rifles converted to 7.62x39 in China by reboring, with chamber inserts to compensate for the shorter round - which have been known to come loose.
 
Possibly rebarelled?

A 31st series Toyo Kogyo would have been made in 1942 or 1943 in Hiroshima. ALL those guns were 7.7 Japanese which fired a .311" diameter spitzer bullet.

If it's 8mm, it's either a Chinese capture rebarelled post-war to 8mm or a commercial rebarrel.

I'm leaning towards Chinese. Got any pics of the receiver markings?
 
The .30-06 conversions have a little notch cut in the receiver ring to clear the bullet tips when charger loading. The 7.7 round is a bit larger diameter than the '06, so fired cases may be a bit expanded toward the head.
 
Checked some things out .It headspaces perfectly for 8x57.But there are no extra proof marks either chinese or Importer. Outward appearance the rifle is still historically correct except for the mum.Grind marks on receiver ring also on barrel ahead of ring.
