8mm Mauser ammo supply?

I have been searching for this ammo for some time now. Everyone is out. Does anyone know where to go, and why are they so hard to come by in Canada?
 
It's hard to find this side of the pond.
The most modern surplus is from ex Bloc countries from the 80's when everyone either switched to 7.62 NATO or 7.62 x 54R.

Commercial loads are not very common in North America, most people who are going to shoot 8mm for hunting etc can do the job with the much more common brother cartridge of .30-06.

Sadly the 8mm Mauser has gone the way of the .30-06 for military use.

Surplus is surely abundant still but there never seems to be much of it brought into Canada despite the huge demand for it which I always found odd. In the US it's dirt cheap and plentiful. When it comes into Canada, it's always in tiny amounts and about the same price as new commercial factory loadings anyway so there isn't usually much point to buy it unless you buy a lot.

There is gads of it in private hands though lol I have a hell of a lot of it. Probably close to 1000 rounds or more. Mostly Yugo surplus fromt the 60's, 70's and 80's.
 
Surplus is sporadically available at best, but it is out there and be prepared to jump on it. Commercial soft point loads are not uncommon to find in half the stores or better, but its at a premium price. I picked up a couple hundred commercial loads just to have the brass, but also ordered in some good quality Norma brass. Reloading puts the cost at about 60 cents for superior quality loads, and is probably your best friend if you can save enough brass to do so.
 
Thanks guys. The local Canadian Tire has had it on order since last fall. I have to stop looking on American sites, makes me jealous. I think I will take your advice and look into reloading. Problem is I have no brass. I bought my K98 in the fall, and yet to fire it. Thanks again.
 
Not sure where you live, but phone up a few of the closest gun shops (real gun shops with real gun people, not CT or Wallymart) and inquire about some commercial loads for 8mm, and ask if they can order you in some good quality brass as well. Also. check out the tables next time your at a gun show. Lots of people selling off good brass and loading components.

Even if you do buy the Sellior and belliot....its still not full power ammo.

all run there 196gr-200gr bullets @ approx. 2450fts. When you reload that's when you get full power house. 200gr bullet @ 2550-2650fts range. Now that stuff is good for the 8mm....its more power than a 30-06.
 
I'd recommend the Eurospec ammo if you can find it eg, S&B, PRVI. The north american loadings tend to be pretty light because of the possibility of it being fired in an older .318 bore.
 
Buddy loves his mausers and buys his 8mm from Epps all the time. Reasonable prices. Last week we went out to the range and Epps was completely out of 8mm with the exception of a $90 box of 20 match grade of some sort. Buddy turned it down. Luckily he's always saved his brass.
 
OP, there are many gun shows in AB during the year, in fact there is one coming up this Saturday in Edmonton (May 10) at the Hanger on Kingsway (beside the Aviation Museum).
If you can attend, you should be able to find some Surplus 8mm. I've found surplus 8mm at every AB gun show I've been to this year.
