8mm Mauser boresighting laser

Better off to throw the rifle on some sand bags, pull the bolt and look through to bore.

Ayup. There is that.

The problem with the laser boresighters, as I see it, is that they are generally made by the same Chinese manufacturers that supply all manner of low rent geegaws and assorted junk to the 'by the sea can' distributors.

I was involved with a fella that was trying to get started on his invention idea back in the late 1980's, where he was trying to develop just this product. It takes a rather better class of laser pointer than the Chinese generally make at a low price, to get it to point straight down the barrel. And a better class of focusing lens, and lens housing.

Making the body is quite cost effective, several different calibers can be served by one 'case' shape, using O-rings to center it in the chamber. Getting the dot to rotate on a single spot when the assembly was rotated in the lathe was fiddly hand work.

The experiences then, convince me that at best, a laser boresight aid is a novelty, and like as not, not to be relied upon.

Cardboard box, with a couple notches cut in it, a set of sandbags, some rolled up towels, pretty much anything will work. Peek through the barrel, see to it that the scope points generally the same place, then fire and adjust as required. Gonna have to shoot it anyway, to see that it all works.

One of the fellas here put me on to the Bushnell magnetic unit. IIRC they were about $45. He carried his with him on a couple operational tours, used it to verify that settings had not changed (ie: once sighted in and verified, he made a note of where the aim point appeared on the grid, and checked that it remained there) when he went out.

It boils down to, that for the price of a toy, a fella could chose to buy a tool instead.

Cheers
