I was at the range on Saturday shooting my K98 using old 7,9MM military surplus. 12-1954. I believe it to be Yugo or Russian. Anyways, getting to the point, I experienced 5 miss-fires in a row. Prior I had no problem shooting Ingman ammo. Could this be caused by an older firing pin or just old crapy ammo? Very frustrating indeed!

Thanks

...I think, as suggested above, 2 causes are available but, not entirely seperate issues...

i) weak mainspring (not enough punch to "wake up" the hard Yugo primer

ii) Cold weather affecting any lubricants/protectants. When the "grease" is cold, anything moving in/through it has to work harder...a weak mainspring would suffer a little more having to work through cold-hardened grease

...Again, it may be the Ammo too but, 5 in a row? Not great odds. One good test, try some different ammo (allow your rifle to cool back to ambient while testing different brands)

If there were no problems firing the rifle before, and the only difference is a change in temperature, the problem is the grease in the bolt thickening and binding the firing pin spring. Wipe the grease off the spring. and clean out the bolt body. Springs don't get weak in a few days., so unless it is actualy broken, that ain't the problem.

I had an identical problem at Mission a few weeks back. A shot of bore scrubber ( nothing else available at the range ) and some repeated working of the action and I was back in play after 5 mins. Cleaned the crud out later at home - some old grease had coagulated in the cold weather.

There shouldn't be any grease in the bolt.
"...no problem shooting Ingman ammo..." Use it. You won't likely find any more 8mm milsurp ammo anyway.

Grease in bolt = attributed to laziness on my part not removing all the bloody cosmo when I got the rifle ( an unissued Yugo ) back in the Summer. I don't think the problem was anything other than that :)

Is the bolt easy to take apart and clean? Any good links to on-line DIY bolt breakdown?

THanks alot guys. Wealth of knowledge here.

I have had nothing but problems at my local gun shop regarding asking for help or having questions. Always feel like you have done something bad.

Thanks again.
