8mm Mauser vs 30-06 loads

Comparing the two, I came up with some interesting results.
Both rifles shooting 220 grain bullets.

30-06 ------2511 fps.
8mm------- 2487 fps.
Both loads were clocked over the same chronograph.
I don't believe that any critter could tell the difference.

Ballistically they're very close. No surprise there. I'm a big fan of the 8mm Mauser cartridge.

Yeah, it's only NOW, that Federal started offering ammo, that someone thought about necking up the .308 to .338-08...

I may give some of those 220gr. fmj's I have laying around a try, must have a decent recoil, my old man is already complaining about the 175's

The .338-08 has been around since the 50's.

The 06 was shooting Hornady's and the 8mm was shooting Sierra's.

The 358 Win does all of the above and you can stoke it up with 250's at 2300 fps.

But it was a flop and no-one owns one.

I know several people who one one so your statement is not exactly correct.

The biggest reason that the round is not more popular has nothing to do with it's performance but rather it's rather noticeable recoil and muzzle jump in the light lever actions that were chambered for it. A good number of years ago I had one in an all-steel pre-81 BLR and if you didn't have a good grip on it it would hurt you bad.

Today's 338-08 are all so far chambered in bolt actions which are easier to control and manage recoil better.

So ................... it may not be the cartridge that was a flop but rather the platform they were offered in.

I have an 8x57 Remington 700 Classic, and it will drive the 175/180's to 2800+ and the 200's to 2650. That makes it a pretty potent package, and a couple of bear and a couple of moose will attest to just how deadly. Regards, Eagleye.
