8mm Mauser

I have several rifles in 8mm and the surplus ammo nowadays comes by few and far between. ANY deal is probably a good deal as opposed to none. While I prefer to make my own high quality loads, I still enjoy shooting surplus when possible. A dozen years ago I picked up 2x 3 gallon pails of loose ammo that was dirty and greasy with cosmo. Seemed a bit pricey at the time but it all cleans up in the tumbler and every round fires well. It was 8 cents per round.

I work with a guy who has been shooting for the last 50 plus years and owns a small gun shop. I will find out the true value of this ammo and all the extras tomorrow at work. I don't like buying ammo and not shooting it. I did a google search and some of the last Turkish showed up in Canada around 2000, that's 16 years ago. All the range reports said it shoots great. I will range test it next weekend to see.

Its not a matter of buying ammo and not shooting it, its about buying it when it is available. Every year whats for sale in 8mm gets less by half for the next year. Just like the path of surplus .303 ammo, it will dwindle away until three is almost no more. Buy it when it is available because there is no more to be had. As long as it does not cost more than commercial ammo or loading your own, you probably have a good deal.

I wish NRCAN would allow us to import surplus 8x57mm ammo like they get very easily in the states. For example this Ammo is current manufacture military ammo made in Romania by the Mechanical Plant Sadu, and exported by Romtechnica, that sells down south for $314.99 for a case of 720 rounds -

Or this 1980's manufacture Yugo brass cased sniper 8mm ammo that sells for $459 for a 900 round bulk case -

There are more than a few companies in Canada that either the Romanian or Yugoslav ammunition would be in their wheelhouse and yet no one imports it. I have a feeling that it is one of three reasons: a) too expensive b) no interest for manufacturer in Canadian market c) no real demand in Canadian market.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was all three.

Tagged. I love my 8mm. Flys like a Laser beam.

Please let us revive the 8mm as a viable shooter here in Canada too. If we can import from Europe why not 8x57 too?

I would be in for any type of bulk surplus order whenever it is made for 1000 to 2000 rounds

I am in for 1-2000 rounds when any of the site sponsors here decide to order bulk 8mm ammo.... or list some by the case for semi reasonable prices.

Yes it's quite a disappointing scene in Canada for 8mm, k98's and all sort of variations have been sold here for a long time. Yet no one decides to import the good ammo that the states eats up everyday. To make matters worse we are stuck with underloaded commercial ammunition. (Except S&B)

Btw nice score angry! Green with envy.
on another note I scored 200 South African .303 surplus last year, shoots like a laser and is non corrosive :)

S&B is the best 8mm ammo around. Took my k98 yugo to the range in my safety shoot day and fired 2 rds just I'd trust it for the moose hunt. Later the first shot in the Centre and the other an inch left., can have an accurate rifle just need a more consistent shooter lol
I will be hunting with S&B 8x57JS SPCE a round that is good for anything on the planet with legs.

The collector like the crate is not messed with in the bandoliers the ammo came in and on stripper clips from the factory. This is also from turkey and holds 1400 rounds, all of witch is there and the ammo is pristine.

When I bought my mg34 I got around 300 rounds of the 50s yugo 8mm ammo but my mg34 didnt like it, I couldnt get the gun to work properly with it. always jammed while feeding. Once i started to reload my own I made the OAL the same as the yugo surplus and had no luck either, always had issues with the round jamming as it was being fed. A friend of mine suggested that I push the bullet down further a bit in the shell and I tried it and what do you know it worked perfectly! I took about a hundred rounds of the yugo surplus and pushed the bullets down the same as my reloads but have yet to try it to see if it works better in the gun.
If anyone out there is having feeding issues with their mg34 try to make the OAL a couple mils shorter, it may solve your problem
It would really really be nice if some more 8mm surplus comes to Canada. Marstar supposedly promised to bring some in but it never happened :(
I cant see there being no demand for the stuff as a lot of the time the commercial stuff is sold out and I have been having issues lately finding brass and bullets for reloading as most is sold out. Mystic was finally able to supply me with some brass, just need some bullets now!

Over the years, I have gathered some nice 8mm surplus. I had some Yugo stuff that the casings were pretty badly corroded. I pulled the bullets, kept the good ones, tossed the real bad cases and used the powder to load some 7.62 NATO for my Israeli 98 and DCRA No.4.

I have an ugly old CZ 98 re chambered to 8mm-06. I used the nickel plated casings with the silver colored bullets from the Yugo 8x57 salvage. That way I know by looking which ammo is for target shooting in the 8mm-06. They make a nice looking round.
