Unless you rifle is bored for the 318 bullets, the 8mm Mauser is the same as any other rifle cartridge, as far as reloading goes.
For a milsurp that you are using for plinking and informal target work, stick with min or middle loads, or shoot cast. For hunting, to get good performance you should load to nearly max.
IMHO you do not need an expensive bullet, at 8x57 velocity a conventional cup and core does OK. I like the Speer or Sierra bullets. 150 for small (deer) game, or a 175 as an all around hunter, or the 200 gr for serious work. A high BC bullet extends the range of rifle, shoots flatter and further.
