8mm Mauser

I'm sure he can get you brass as well. Surplus is for sh*ts and giggles rather than serious shooting.

Yeah surplus is for ####s.

Checking right now at the prices it is actually cheaper for me to buy a preloaded 8mm round and reload later using the brass than to buy the brass now and reload.

"...cheaper for me to buy..." If you do that, you'll have to try a box of as many brands as you can to find the ammo your rifle shoots best. The price of the ammo means nothing either.
Reloading lets you tailor the ammo to your rifle. Mind you, it does make a difference if you're reloading already. Then it's just dies, a shell holder(usually, but 8mm Mauser uses the same one as .308 Win) and components.

Yeah I just want some prices regarding the different brands.

I've been shooting Remington commercial loads and slowly collecting brass. I'm having lots of success with 170gr sp home loads. I've got an order for more brass on the way. The commercial loads are good, but not at 35 bucks a box. Reloading puts me under 70 cents/round and give me a better bullet. Its the only way to go for this round, given you've acquired some brass.

Having that said, I may still pick up some surplus for sh*ts n giggles.

If you are hunting with your 8mm, the North American loaded ammo is very weak compared to European ammo. The reason is that the American companies have never made a distinction between ammo for the old .318 bore and the modern .323 or "S" bore rifles. They do not even list their ammo by the proper 8x57I or 8x57IS designation, it is all simply listed as "8mm Mauser". Ammunition by Norma, RWS, and similar top quality European manufacturers load 8x57IS to maximum CIP standard pressures, making their loads the equivalent in the field to the 30-06. By contrast, the SAAMI specifications make the stuff from Remington, Winchester and Federal perform about the equivalent to a .32 special. That's OK if you are happy with a close range deer load but I prefer a bit more "horsepower" for the bigger stuff. Handloading your 8x57 is certainly the most economical choice for full power loads in Canada.

The remington factory 170gr. registers the same speed as starting load for the 175gr. sierra I use so about 2300 fps.......Crank it up to 2700 FPS and then you are talking Big Game.

wtf is "preloaded" ammo?- brass?no such word

Make the leap.

Yeah I heard about that. Thank god I will be reloading for this gun later + using European ammo.

Idiots

you make the leap- and LEARN YOUR TERMINOLOGY- just the same as those idiots that insist on 45 LONG colt

It,s nice to see experts with vast amonts of knowledge, that can point out to me, my father and my grand father, that we are idiots for saying 45 long colt. My wife is probably mistaken her marlin in 45 LC, [stamped on the barrel] will protect her and our children, here in the Yukon.

The 7.92 x 57mm IS (8mm) is a formittable calibre. Congrats Red bonefish on a winner. Longwalker is dead one concerning loads for this beast. I shoot S&B 196gr for moose. I wouldn't bother if all I had was North American loads.
Reloading is a great idea if you want to get control of what you poke out the barrel, but the Lapua/ Privi Partisan european loads are also very creditable, it just depends which european load that your particular rifle likes the best.

Trade-Ex (banner advertiser, link at the top of this page) has nice Serbian brass at $60 a hundred, several different slugs at reasonable prices. FAST service, too.

Then you can start in by finding an accurate load, then hot it up until it's not accurate any longer. That's the way it almost always works, you know: the ACCURATE loading is below the HEAVY loading.

Depends on if you want to hit the critter or demolish the mountain behind it.

Just as a rule of thumb, often you will find the most accurate load about 10% below the hottest load..... which means pressures about 20% lower and a barrel life about double what you would get with the barn-burners.
