I've been shooting Remington 170gr ammo with really nice groups, but yet do better with home loads. For brass and/or loaded ammo try: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=570938
I'm sure he can get you brass as well. Surplus is for sh*ts and giggles rather than serious shooting.
"...cheaper for me to buy..." If you do that, you'll have to try a box of as many brands as you can to find the ammo your rifle shoots best. The price of the ammo means nothing either.
Reloading lets you tailor the ammo to your rifle. Mind you, it does make a difference if you're reloading already. Then it's just dies, a shell holder(usually, but 8mm Mauser uses the same one as .308 Win) and components.
wtf is "preloaded" ammo?- brass?no such word
If you are hunting with your 8mm, the North American loaded ammo is very weak compared to European ammo. The reason is that the American companies have never made a distinction between ammo for the old .318 bore and the modern .323 or "S" bore rifles. They do not even list their ammo by the proper 8x57I or 8x57IS designation, it is all simply listed as "8mm Mauser". Ammunition by Norma, RWS, and similar top quality European manufacturers load 8x57IS to maximum CIP standard pressures, making their loads the equivalent in the field to the 30-06. By contrast, the SAAMI specifications make the stuff from Remington, Winchester and Federal perform about the equivalent to a .32 special. That's OK if you are happy with a close range deer load but I prefer a bit more "horsepower" for the bigger stuff. Handloading your 8x57 is certainly the most economical choice for full power loads in Canada.
Make the leap.
Yeah I heard about that. Thank god I will be reloading for this gun later + using European ammo.
you make the leap- and LEARN YOUR TERMINOLOGY- just the same as those idiots that insist on 45 LONG colt
the HISTORICALLY correct term is 45 colt- look it up-
