im a little confused

i have been buying "8mm Mauser" ammunition from winchester for a few years now from wholesale sports

i went in today to get some more and i asked if they had 8mm mauser in Hornady (wanna try a new load)

the gent behind the counter handed me a box of hornady but it said "7x57 mauser" on the side


is the 7x57 mauser exactly the same as my winchester 8mm mauser?
 
never mind i did a little digging and a short phone call to Hornady to hear it from the horses mouth. Hornady lists their 8mm mauser as 8x57 JS

haha i told him about the box wholesale gave me and he laughed, "it will fit but you wont like the outcome!"

lol Someone once told me that of course you could chamber a .380 auto in a 9 x 19 mm chambered gun, but that doesn't mean you should

just got back from WSS f*** morons! insisted they were right and i was wrong!.


i even asked for a box of winchester 8mm mauser and they had a box so i pulled out the round from each box and held them side by side and asked if they could spot the difference..

even after that they insisted it would work!

so i promtly left WSS and went else where....how on earth is WSS still in business??

Well it's a good thing you caught that mistake. Imagine if someone less cautious were to have purchased that ammo for their mauser?

This caliber can be a little confusing for some people since 8mm Mauser is actually 7.92 x 57mm; but obviously not 7x57 Mauser.
 
reason i walked out with it was because i assumed they had a clue!

and yes it can be confusing 8mm mauser=7.92x57=8x57 :eek:

but being a consumer the people behind the firearms desk should know about the product they are selling....by some odd chance that round went into my mauser and the bolt closed (which it might have) and the firing pin contacted the primer that could have been a disasterG:
 
probably not much really, like firing a 270 in a 30/06. it should headspace, and fireform, but the bullet skittering down the bbl, wouldn't go far or be accurate
 
i don't and won't "trust" ANYBODY- get yourself a GOOD reloading manual and READ the friggin thing EVEN IF YOU DON'T PLAN ON RELOADING- had you made it YOUR business to research your rifle, you would have realized that the 8mm and 7mm are DIFFERENT BORE DIAMETERS- (323vs 284) and wouldn't have trusted the counter monkey
THIS IS A SPORT IN WHICH MISTAKES CAN BE DEADLY, if not just COSTLY-

im sorry but maybe you didnt read the first few posts but i did catch the mistake bud!

hence why i went back to WSS. i posted this to make people aware of yet another (all too common) issue with WSS

i know my rifles if i didnt i wouldnt own them.

read 8 posts back! i obviously did not trust the counter monkey.. i just didnt look at the box he handed me
 
i've dealt with wss for years- there's NO POINT in trying to tell the counter monkeys ANYTHING- i DID CATCH THAT YOU CAUGHT THE MISTAKE, BUT I WAS ADVISING FOR OTHERS that may not be as diligent as you -lately there's been a buying frenzy of sorts on m305s and subsequently questions that are elementary in light of having a reloading manual

Always double check that they give you the right ammo when you buy from anyone. I've had clerks give me 38 Super when I asked for 38 Special etc., Might be the clerk's fault, or maybe the guy before him stacked it in the wrong section of the shelf. Doesn't matter, always verify. Even at specialty (gun only) shops this has happened. Once out of the store, they are under no obligation to take it back depending on thier policy.
