I am beginning to suspect that a previous owner has cut down the length of the piston return spring in my 8mm Egyptian SAFN-49. Currently, when installed on the piston, my piston spring is about 1/4" to 1/2" short of the end of the piston. In other words there is about 1/4" to 1/2" of bare piston rod showing then the spring is installed.

Is this correct? I suspect it should be longer as my rifle is extremely hard on brass, even though the gas ring is wide open.

The spring is probably collapsed a bit with age. The piston should be fully forward under spring pressure IE you should have to compress the spring a bit to install the gas plug. Check Numrick gun parts for a replacement.
