just became owner of a minty 26 year old BDL 700 in 8mm Remington

anybody own one?
I bought a box of 200 grain Safari factory ammo featuring the 200 grain Swift bullet. s**t it cost almost as much as the gun :kickInTheNuts:

I'll try to round up some reloading dies and some 250 grain Woodleighs for later...

Don't bother getting dies. Just ship it to Holborn and have him rebore it to .358 STA. Layne Simpsons brainchild. You will then have the ultimate .35 and be man enough to shoot it.

I figure it could kill a grizzly

this rifle has a 24 inch barrel, it will be interesting to see what kind of velocity it will do. Burning 80 grains of powder you'd think a 26" tube would be better but I think the 24" will be nicer to carry through the bush

with a 200 gr bullet it's basically a 300 Wtby with a bit more bullet diameter......never forget my first elk trip in 1991...guy in the next camp was carrying one of those BDL 8mags......that wasn't so unusual but the 6.5-20X Leupy on to of it was kind of out of place I thought...

I have offtimes looked at one,but wisedom got the better of me each time. Nothing wrong with the chambering, 2/3 of the way between a 300Wea and a 340Wea,and better brass to boot. But a M-700 is light graceful action ,as is the BDL stock design. Heck, even stouter guys then me think a 30-06 BDL needs a recoil pad.For the fast hard recoil of the 8mmRM you need a more closed stock, with lots of pull back.

rembo you thought that 6.5 x20 looked out of place on that 8mm,wait till you see's mountain man tod bartells shoulder after he shoots that puppy,he's going to look like a tuning fork. there aint nothing wimpy about the recoil that thing produces.

Hi, I have one and will "never sell it". The recoil is negligable to be, it's about the same as a 20 gauge with slug loads. When I was first sighting it in (and playing) I ran 40 rounds through mine in an afternoon, no sore shoulder etc.

It definately has a different sound to it. I love it !!!

At one time I owned two of them, one was Magnaported and the other box stock, the 8mmRM is the round I have made the longest shot on game with, it was a moose and I hit him at over 400 yds with a 220 Sierra SBT, one shot buckled his knees. If you handload it will allow you to play with a bunch of good bullets, more so today than in the past, in no small way because of the advent of the 325 WSM, they both take the same diameter bullets. The only thing I didn't like about the gun was that it was a little heavy for carrying.

I have one, with a 26" barrel. It's a good cartridge, as mentioned, a 300 Wby that makes bigger holes. I can get an easy 3000 fps with 220 gr bullets out of mine, and 3100 fps with some powders. I don't find the Rem stock bad at all, better then the Win monte carlo for me. I have some 250 gr bullets I have yet to shoot anything but paper with, but maybe this year. It was once called the best elk rifle ever by some gun writer, and I would mostly agree with that statement. If you need modern load data Todd, just send me PM. - dan

Hi Todd,I've got 1 too.26'' BBL,in a McMillan Mountain Rifle stock,so it's not that heavy,and recoil is not that bad.I'm getting 3050fps with RL-25 and 220gr A-Frames. Mur.:shotgun:
