8mm magnum

I too have an 8 mag. Bought a Model 70 in 7Mag, didn't impress me so I had it rechambered to 8 Mag. That was 20 years ago. Used 220 gr. Hornady until they were discontinued, now use 200 NP. I bought some 250 Gr. Woodleigh but they wouldn't resize correctly, so I gave they to Dan Belisle, he said he had good results with them in 8x68s but not in his 8 mag. Best for you to contact him. Now using 200 NP getting 3050 chrono'd. That being said I have retired the 8 and use my Tikka M695 .338 Mag. The 8 is now a back up gun. Karl
 
well I think this rifle will be a bit of a project for me, with no rush on it. It was a great deal I couldnt pass up, so if it sits in the cabinet for a while its not much $$ tied up. I think first order of business will be to get some brass and reloading dies, and optics/mounts. Im leaning towards Leupold quick release with a fixed 4x Leupold. Might upgrade the iron sights too. Later I may swap the stock out for a fiberglass McMillan and get the metal coated with something weatherproof. Maybe Nosler will come out with a 220 grain 8mm semi spitzer for the 325 wsm, that would be one bullet I'd be interested in. By the looks of things I'll probably develop a lighter practice load with the Sierra 175 grain spitzer, and a full house load with a premium bullet. I'd like something in the 220 grain range but options seems limited. 220 A-Frames seem like a good one if I can find a decent supply of them. Common sense would be to sell it for a profit and buy a 338 but what fun would that be :rolleyes: :D

I've never loaded for this cartridge before, but if I were to start, the first bullets I'd try would be either a 200-grain TSX or a 200-grain Accubond, over a suitable charge of something like IMR 7828 or H1000. No animal in North America would be safe from that combination, if it worked out.

Remington Safari 200 grain A-Frame factory ammo chrony'd @ 2915 fps avg out of the 24" tube. Recoil was stout but not too harsh, I think it's a keeper. Weight with the 3-9x40 VXII in Talley rings is 8.5 lbs
 
hah good question..#### Ive already had numerous offers to buy/trade for this gun :D

I'll round up some reloading dies and some H1000 for the summer, I think I'll stick to the factory A-Frames for the spring, it will probably come with me on my grizzly hunt in May :wave:
 
quick detach mounts and a fixed 4 power is what I think will find their way atop it eventually. Maybe I should go with gloss?

Oh and I'd forget the scope and leave that beastie with those Iron sights..it screams Safari that way and besides a scope looks just plain Ghey with sights anyways:puke:

finally got to try some handloads today

175 grain Sierra soft points over 72 grains H4350 does 2950 fps and recoil isnt too bad. Groups ran around 1.5" @ 100 meters.

200 grain Barnes Triple Shocks over 81 grains H4831sc does 3000 fps avg and accuracy was averaging around 1.25" at 100m. +2 high puts me +.5" @ 200 meters, nice and flat shooting for phazer shots on grizzly bears. My last 2 shots at 200m hit one inch apart, just above point of aim. Time to go huntin'! :D

I leave for a short grizz hunting trip in 6 days. BTW the 30-06 is sighted in too...haha
 
I had a chance to buy one 3 years ago with all the dies for $675. I wasn't interested then but kick my butt now for not buying it.

Ya that's what I'm talkin bout - put a gloss scope on it with some old purple rings and watch the babes go wild :onCrack:

We'll see what mr Grimzlee thinks :wave:
