8mm STB

I have one, with a 26" barrel. It's a good cartridge, as mentioned, a 300 Wby that makes bigger holes. I can get an easy 3000 fps with 220 gr bullets out of mine, and 3100 fps with some powders. I don't find the Rem stock bad at all, better then the Win monte carlo for me. I have some 250 gr bullets I have yet to shoot anything but paper with, but maybe this year. It was once called the best elk rifle ever by some gun writer, and I would mostly agree with that statement. If you need modern load data Todd, just send me PM. - dan

Dan,

How would you compare it to a cartridge like the .340 Weatherby? Maybe an "8" is what I need...

Jeff.

Coastal Bear or mountain?

Come time to pull the trigger your 8 mil will feel pretty small....Will do a good job though.
That 10X scope will make the bear seem real close and does nothing to help you. Every bear I have ever shot has been at 1.5X.

Either way I bet you come back and buy a 375....I should start a poll! :D :D

Is this your first Grizz?

first grizz hunt yes

the scope is a 3-9x40 and I have been shooting it with it set on 4.5x

and mountain grizzly, not brown bears :D

The 8mm Rem Magnum, 0.323" diameter bullets, falls exactly between the 30 magnums, 0.308" and the 338 magnums, 0.338" diameter. It is potentially the best of both, especially in the full length case.

I have a friend who actually shot a factory barrel out in an 8mm Rem mag, after several thousands of rounds. He used it for everything from gophers to grizzlies for more than 20 years, and figured that it was better than his 300 Wby on really big game.

The 200 gr partition or 220 gr Hornady with a stomach full of H4831 and magnum primers put away several truckloads of game, and never a whimper from the rifle, except the barrel eventually going south.

He had Bevan King install a new 28" barrel, and now figures that he really has something! :)

I guess he does, too, as 220s at a bit less than 3000 fps are hard to argue with. Let us know how you make out with yours.

in all honesty I'd rather have a 338 Win Mag but the price on this 8mm Mag was far too low to pass up.

for Gatehouse :

a 8mm Rem Mag with a 200 grain TSX @ 3000 fps compared to the 338 Win Mag with a 210 gr TSX @ 2900 fps

8mm Rem Mag
295 yard +/- 3" PBR
252 yard zero
Energy @ 50 yards - 3720 ft-lbs
Energy @ 350 yards - 2380 ft-lbs
Drop @ 350 yards -8.3"

338 Win Mag
285 yard +/- 3" PBR
243 yard zero
Energy @ 50 yards - 3640 ft-lbs
Energy @ 350 yards - 2265 ft-lbs
Drop @ 350 yards -9.9"

Recoil Energy in 8.5 lb rifles

8mm : 39 ft-lb recoil energy
338 : 35 ft-lb recoil energy

At least the 338 gives you heavy bullet capability, the 8mm is surely lacking there, especially in a high BC premium 220 grain :( Although I suspect not much will shrug off a 200 gr X bullet at three grand

Jeff, the 8 RM will shoot a little flatter then a 340 Wby (I shoot that as well), and make a bigger hole then a 300 Wby (yup, got one of them as well). I wouldn't say it's better then, just a very nice compromise between the two. It shoots a well weighted bullet (I prefer the 220s) at a good velocity (300-3100 fps in my rifle). Makes a great hunting rifle, and 375 fans to the contrary, will kill anything that walks on this continent (or any other, for that matter). - dan

Todbartel,

FWIW I would pull the 8 mil barrel and go 340 Wby with 250's.

It and the 338 Ultra get my vote for the ultimate mountain bear gun.

But like I said the 8 Mil will work.

Maybe so, but I never saw my 338 WM do anything spectacular compared to my 300WM- Not to say that the 8mm WILL do something spectacular...

But for whatever reason, my 375 H&H made a bigger impression on game.

I felt that the 338WM was kinda ghey-promised big medicine, but delivered Big smoke...

i woudl rather have a 338-06, in a lighter rifle. Of course, the 375 Ruger will trump them all!!

I have had four of them, I think. Arch 1965 got one of them I think - was that the custom rig Arch, or one of the 700s?

Two were 700 BDLs and one was a 700 Classic IIRC. All of them went west after I played with them. I never did shoot any living creature with one, but I found the cartridge to be very accurate, and was convinced (and remain convinced) that the 8 Mag was adequate medecine for anything that walks the planet.

IIRC the best performance for me was with a Norma Dual Core bullet right around 200 grains, perhaps 196??? Arch got a lot of interesting bullets from me including some custom 250s......or so this poor old brain thinks.

Conclusion: I think it is a great cartridge but pretty well all of the detailed memory on it is long gone......and so are the guns!

Just came from hunt shoot.

Sorry to hear things went poorly.
Those big boys can really soak up the lead.

Can I say I told you so! :slap: :D :D

Nice attempt at a follow up....That takes a lot of balls (bet the gun felt pretty damn small !!). :p :p

Misses and Sh$t are part of hunting.
I'm just glad nobody got hurt.

Better luck (and a bigger gun) next time!

8 Rem mag

Here's another vote for the 8 mag
have had one for several years have shot several caribou, several black bears, several yukon moose, an elk, a Grizzly bear, coyotes , even the odd grouse! it is a very reliable killer
my loads are all over 3000 FPS, 3090 for the 220, 3100 for the 200
two bullets I really liked are
1. the 200 gr, speer Hot cor @3100 took a Good bull elk at 30 paces hit him three times three perfect mushrooms recoverd against the far shoulder
pretty good I thought, for a standard construction bullet.
2. The 196 norma dual core @3100 took several moose with that one, bullets expand very well and hang together
this is a very accurate bullet I have a target that I shot @300 meters with a group @ 1and 3 16ths (witnessed by Whynot on this board)
mine has a Remington synthetic stock and the remington r3 pad on it
it is very light but that pad and the syn stock really soak up the recoil
this is one rifle that my estate may sell but I never will!!

back to kootenay, thanks for confirming that the bullet I was remembering that I also found to be very accurate is indeed the 196 gr Norma Dual Core, as I had thought (but was no longer sure!)

Doug

I've always thought the 8(.323)mmRM would be a wicked caliber for bear, elk, moose. I think ideally it would want a lead-core bullet from 230-250grs, but then if you're using Barnes X I wouldn't know whats ideal?

Also I love those old M-700's.

Boddington is an idiot. :runaway:

Anyway, hope you know a good dentist Bartell. That 8mm will loosen your fillings... :p

I'm dying to know how you know this.

Have you met him? Has he wronged you in some way? Did he steal from you? Or is it because Boddington is wealthier, smarter, more famous and has travelled and hunted in more countries then you have even visited?
