8mm STB

I have had four of them, I think. Arch 1965 got one of them I think - was that the custom rig Arch, or one of the 700s?

Two were 700 BDLs and one was a 700 Classic IIRC. All of them went west after I played with them. I never did shoot any living creature with one, but I found the cartridge to be very accurate, and was convinced (and remain convinced) that the 8 Mag was adequate medecine for anything that walks the planet.

IIRC the best performance for me was with a Norma Dual Core bullet right around 200 grains, perhaps 196??? Arch got a lot of interesting bullets from me including some custom 250s......or so this poor old brain thinks.

Conclusion: I think it is a great cartridge but pretty well all of the detailed memory on it is long gone......and so are the guns!

Hi Doug, mine is the rem model 700. Jeweled bolt, Monte Carlo stock and all that..... I've got enough brass to reload for about 20 years :D :D :D

Gatehouse,

I don't want to start the big bore/poor shot placement thing but I believe that had Bartel been backing up his (crappy marksmen) buddy with my 416 and 400 Noslers (or a properly loaded 375) the picture would have been very different...Like a dead bear actually!

Had Toddbartel mentioned that he was backing up a buddy that can't shoot I think most of us would have told him to get a 375???
30 mags, 8 mags, and even 338's are all good when things go right. I feel a hunter needs to make some allowance for things going badly.

After what Toddbartel just went through....I would want a bigger gun!

Sh$$ happens when hunting bears because fear makes for poor marskmanship...it happens to us all.

Big bears are no place for pea shooters.

Coastal Bear or mountain?

Come time to pull the trigger your 8 mil will feel pretty small....Will do a good job though.
That 10X scope will make the bear seem real close and does nothing to help you. Every bear I have ever shot has been at 1.5X.

Either way I bet you come back and buy a 375....I should start a poll! :D :D

Is this your first Grizz?

Again I have nothing but respect for Toddbartel for following up that bear.

Just making a suggestion for next time....A suggestion I am willing to back up.

I have a Shilen stainless barrel in 416 Rem (shoots MOA), dies, and brass that I would GIVE to Toddbartel IF he screws it on to his Remington.

How's that for putting my money where my mouth is??

8mm Rem Mag I know, but what is an 8mm "Shooting Times Bartell"? Does he also shoot a 22 STB (22 LR)? ;)

I have access to a 416 Rem (23" King stainless fluted, McMillan sako stock, stainless 700 action, Swarvo 3-10x42 TDS). I'll leave it at home when I leave this weekend, I'm just not very familiar with the rifle

had the 30-06 & 8mm out today at the range and both of my first shots out of the rifles hit +1.5" @ 100m.

1. Back to arch1965, thanks for the reminder, this old noggin just CANNOT keep track of all the deals any more.

2. Is there a thread somewhere about what sounds like an unhappy bear hunting experience in which todbartell's choice of guns features prominently? Inquiring minds want to know.....

TBart I just read the story of your grizzly hunt.

It is astonishing how fast a bear can move after it's hit, when it's spinning around like that. At least you were prepared to get in a shot to try to anchor it, but it can be tough to place the bullet where you want in a situation like that.

If that first shot had been placed better the outcome would be better I'm sure. I'm amazed that your buddy never got around to sighting in his rifle!

Do you get any more days to go back out?

Just read the story over on HBC. What a bunch of sanctimonious pricks. I thought Jesus Christ was a once-in-history occurrence, but there are a lot of PERFECT people chucking kaka over there.........

8mm

Todd, check out the Alliant Interactive Reloaders guide, they have a load with the 220gr. Swift A-Frame at 3006fps and Reloader 25.Also the 200gr.A-Frame at 3175.That's the load I'm working on until I can find some 220grs! Mur

Ive got a great load already with a 200 gr TSX @ 3000 fps (h4831sc). Besides, where can a guy find A-Frames? ;) Russell Sports, if they have any in stock?

8mm Mag

I got my 200gr Swifts at Russell's.I've loaded the 200gr. Barnes, but accuracy was indifferent.I'm going to put a drive on to find the 220gr Swifts,if I do I'll let you know!My 8mmMag is down right now Mitch Kendall is repainting the stock, but when it's back together I'll be playing with the 200 Barnes again.Mur

I do not have an 8mm REM but I have an 8x57, I'm going to buy some 220gr Sierra Gamekings and give those an evaluation. I bet they would be a great elk, moose and deer bullet out of these 8mm's.
