8mm Why ? Should I have one?

With everyone going bigger how bout the opposite. I see you prefer velocity but here me out. 222 Remington case necked up to .325. That would leave .032 for a shoulder without the case being blown out at all. It works for the 35 Whelen. Should give you effectively a giant bad ass pellet gun if you used cast bullets. Be great for rabbit and fox.

8mm/350RM?

Been done. Back in the 60's Shooting Times magazine did an article on the then new 350 case and necked it up and down to all the common bore sizes, from 22-350 to 45-350. I tried a bunch of them, with the 7mm-350RM being a favorite at one time (gave 280AI velocities in a short action, basically the predecessor to the 7 WSM/SAUM). The 8mm version was the ballistic equal to the 8mm-06AI, but again in a short action capable cartridge. I built mine on a Mauser 98, as with so many of the wildcats back then as they were readily available and relatively cheap. - dan

If you're underwhelmed by the 338's, as you've mentioned when comparing them to 30 cals, then I don't think an 8mm will overwhelm you.

The only 8mm that has ever remotely interested me is the 8x68S. I still have a box of ammo somewhere, but never did buy one. :D

I fully believe that, as I built an 8mm Rem Mag once and it was even more distressing than the 338...........Like Northman999 said though, if I make it about the rifle more than the caliber...........I think I would snap up a Win Ftrwt in 325 WSM though, I really like the featherwt and in 325 it might be fun. Not overwhelming I'm sure but I would probably never hunt with it, well OK I might go kill a black bear or something with it just to say I did.

Brybenn........I had a 7mm TCU and I don't think an 8mm would have enough shoulder to headspace..........

Dan, didn't Col Askins do a whole article on that 8-350 where he took it to Africa and hammered a bunch of game with it? I vaguely remember reading it many, many years ago, built on a 600/660 if I remember correctly.........My favorite variation on the 350 RM case was a .375 I built 20 or so years back.....the first year Nosler brought out the 260 Part for the 375.....what a performer that little cartridge was and on a 18" barrel. It's still kicking around the Yukon killing moose and caribou every year from what I hear. Built it on a Ruger 77 short action, a swift that wouldn't shoot all that good.

Well boys, who wants to give me a Winchester Featherweight in 325 WSM........it's my birthday today and I made another full year without being shot, stabbed, incarcerated or divorced. This may seem like an easy feat to most of you...........however you haven't lived my life. I must say it is getting easier as I get older.........but there were many years..........

Well, I didn't really mean GIVE me one I'd settle for a PM from someone who would sell me one.......cheap, cause it is my birthday after all...........LOL

PS.........or crashed an airplane (insert after divorced) A landmark year now that I think about it........The only thing I killed though was my biggest black bear ever.

Give Bass Pro in Calgary a ring. I spotted that exact rifle there a few months ago while killing time in the mall.

That one actually crossed my mind briefly but then thought why not go the RCM route and have a little more capacity and no belt.........still holds 3 under unlike the WSM in a slim rifle and I can make my brass from 350 RM brass.........

Winchester 70's hold three down. Save yourself time and effort, just buy a .325wsm and leave it...:)

You ditched the 8X57, 8mm-06, And 8mm rem mag in your opening statement. I think you've already made your mind up on an 8X68 improved......go for it.

Yes he did. Can't remember which gun rag he was writing for at the time, but he hunted everything up to and including Cape Buffalo with that rifle. Large holes and heavy for diameter bullets kill very well even without high velocities. - dan
