In the pursuit of happiness I am trying to put a load together for my 8x57 to head back to Africa with. Loading manuals have had little to say about a load for the 200grain bullet. If I can make the load work I would like to use a 200Gr partition but will work up loads with the 200Gr Accubond. I have in the cupboards IMR4350, IMR4895 and finally IMR4320 If your sheepish to post please feel free to PM. Lets bring a classic mauser back to life and to Africa

Did not even think to look at the hodgon site. Will take a boo. I agree I was leaning towards the IMR 4350 strange my magnums love it as does my 7x57 IMR4350 has proven itself to me in the high arctic all the way down to south Africa. Now to find some hard numbers.
Try to find some european load data - the CIP standard for the 8x57 is 30-06 level and more realistic than the SAAMI limit you will find in most US loading manuals. My best loads (26 in barrel) are:
W760 + Hornady 195 gr Interlok = 2650 fps
Quickload est 48000 psi
IMR4350 + Hornady Interlok = 2600 fps

I know north American standard for ammo is pretty anemic the only way I can makes this cartridge perform is to handload for it. The tricky thing for me is to find the right load and the right load for the claw mount not knowing what the rifle was originally regulated for or what load. I am having problems finding European data. "Quickload" is that the data you can buy from the publishers of handloader?

Published loads in 8X57 are anemic. If you look around, there are more realistic loads. I managed to find a pamphlet that compiles much better load data - published by loadbooks.com. You can find loads up to 2700 fps for the 200 gr pill.

Quickload is a software program that lets you play with load combinations of different powders and bullets in a cartridge and see the estimated pressure and velocity they would produce. Purchase price is about $150 IIRC. I use it a lot but I always start low and work up, and check the results against real data from a chronograph and loading manuals. It hasn't been far off yet in any load I've developed.
