8x57 / 338-06

I have a Model 700 "Classic" Remington chambered in 8x57, and it is a pretty potent package with proper loads. I drive the 180 to 2840, the 200 to 2685, and the 220 to 2550 with Vihtavuori N550 and 560. I shot a moose two falls ago with the Nosler 200 Accubond at 265 yards, and he went down like he was poleaxed. I regard it much the same as a well-loaded 30-06, and it handles heavier bullets better. I'm impressed with the 8x57, and doubt the 338 Federal would outperform it. Regards, Eagleye.

Eagleye, good to see someone cares about the 8x57. What is the 220gr bullet you are using? I have 200gr Speer, which is a Hot Cor. I was told they were developed to handle the 8mm RM; if that is true they ought to be a stout bullet. I also have 200gr Nosler Accubonds and I just bought 220gr Sierra GameKings.

I loaded the 200grers with H-414; used 53grs for both. I got avg 2549 fps with the Speer and 2645 fps with the Accubonds. I am hoping for somewhere around 2450-2500fps with the 220gr GameKings; haven't started work on them yet.

Btw, how do you like the Remington Classic? I have the same rifle... :)

I would have to agree with this statement. I have had a few 8x57's and like them very much and I have had loads worked up that surpass the same load in the 06.
I would probably try the 338 Fed but with the 338-06 being quite popular I think the little Fed may eventually fade away...........

Ive got a couple FN 98's in 8x57, one soon to be a 9.3x62 but have found great luck and sub moa 3 shot groups with 50.3 RL-15 and a hornady 195 spire point interlock bullet at 2650 fps . I personally wouldnt trade it for a 338 federal and think the 8mm is everybit the equal of the 30-06 with heavy bullets.

Demonical; I LOVE my 8x57 Classic!! I have always liked the Remington "Classics" anyway, and own several, but to have one in 8x57 just tickles me pink! I have a Leupold 6x42 MC4 and it makes a great combination. I took a medium Black bear at 100 yards with the 180 Ballistic Tip (I sectioned one, and they have pretty heavy jackets, compared to smaller diameter Ballistic Tips) The bullet entered behind the on-side shoulder and angled slightly forward. It exited on the point of the off side shoulder, breaking bone on exit. Very quick death for the bruin, and not an exceptional amount of meat loss.
In answer to your other query, My 220 grain bullet is the Sierra Gameking also. I shoot the 195 Hornady too. It is accurate and gets good velocity using Norma 204. Regards, Eagleye.

The wildcat the 338 Fed copies (the 338-08) was originally designed to allow heavier/larger diameter bullets to be used in rifles where the 308 cartridges are the limits of what would fit. The first one I ever saw was done on a Win 88, and in that context it makes sense. Other then that, it's just another case of "I need one of those because it's different". And there's nothing wrong with that. - dan

Good thing you added the "nothing wrong with that" clause.

The short mag and new stuff guys would be all over this one.
