I just started reloading for it during the summer I am using the Remington Brass with winchester primers, 50 grains of varget and the remington 185 bulk bullets loaded to a velocity of 2550 anybody else load this cartridge similar at all what do you guys think I found out this year it will go end to to end on big white tail bucks I dont know give me some input please if you could

I have a modern Sporter rifle in 8x57, and I use only 3 bullets in it, the 180 Ballistic Tip @ 2825, the 195 Hornady IL @ 2650, and the 200 Accubond @ 2650. Best powders so far have been Vihtavuori N550 and N150, with N540 close behind. Your 185 Remington bulk bullets should work just fine for deer. I have yet to recover a bullet from my 8x57, even from the two moose that I have shot with it. Great Cartridge IMHO. Regards, Eagleye
 
I don't load 8 X 57 with Varget so I could be wrong, but this seems like a pretty stiff load. I would also think a slower powder would be more efficient.

As a general rule, you can reduce your load by 5%, reduce the pressure by 10%, prolong case life, increase safety margin, reduce copper fouling and still have a highly effective calibre. There is rarely a need for an absolute top load.

There is nothing at all wrong with 8 X 57 as a hunting calibre.
 
I've tried reloading 8x57 with a variety of powders and I found the best accuracy was with IMR4064 for my rifles. That said, 4064 is a lot more temp sensitive than Varget so it wasn't as consistent for me.
I use Hornady 150 and 195 grain bullets for range use though I am sure they would work for hunting as well. In my K98's, I use 50 grains of 4064 in front of the 150's and 47 grains of 4064 in front of the 195's. Both of these are close to the max of the listed loads.
 
I used Hornady 170g bullets and IMR4064 at a velosity around 2650 fps, if I remember right. I shot a few whitetails with this load and all dropped on the spot. I loaded Hornady 195's and found them the best for accuracy, but I never shot any critters with them.
 
thanx guys for the input thats sweet i found that with the varget it was like you said less temperature sensitive and it was were i found the best accuracy we did load a few at like 55 grains and around that area velocity was nice but the accuracy went to s**t so we stepped it down a bit to 50 and i was shooting at those targets from canadian tire and i could keep the bullets within an inch at 100 so we just kept it there not bad from a gun made in 1942 with an 18.5 inch barrel
 
i shoot 150 hornadys in front of 50 grns of varget best load yet . i have seven m 98ks and 7.92x57mm is my main ammo this load works best in all of them
 
I have a VZ-24 Czech Mauser. I was loading 196'ers with 42 grains of 4895. My current load is 49 gr of Varget under a 180gr projectile. Both loads had acceptable hunting ~1.5" accuracy.
 
I have been loading my whitetail ammo for my old 8mm-06 with 53 gr. of 47SB (a Higginson surplus) and 150 gr. Sierra Game Kings. Deer don't go anywhere after a round to the boiler room. Usually the heart and lungs are basically a red pool of mush. I am getting old and crusty and won't shoot unless I have a nice broadside shot on a standing deer.:p:p
