Ok so I have been reloading some 8x57mm test loads from data books. In the end I saw that most data was off by almost 100fps.

RIFLE: GERMAN MAUSER K98K
BARREL LENGTH: 23.6
BOLT ACTION
MILITARY ORGINAL BARREL
MAKE YEAR: 1944
CHONOGRAPH: CHRONY F-1

MUZZLE FROM CHRONY WAS APPROX 8-9FEET AWAY.

IT SEEMS LIKE KEN WATERS LOAD DATA WAS THE MOST ACCURATE TO BOOKS WHILE HODGON LOAD SITE WAS OFF THE MOST.

THIS IS A REAL WORLD SENARIO TEST AND NOT USING A VERY HIGH END BARREL LIKE MOST COMPANIES USE.

DATA I HAVE USED SHOULD BE USED CATIOUSLY AS THERE ARE MANY HOT LOADS.

**IF ANYONE IS LOOKING FOR A GOOD ALL ROUND LOAD (IE.) (GOOD ACCURACY AND GOOD VELOCITY) I WILL MAKE IT BOLD**

IF ANYONE WANTS TO USE THESE LOADS: START A FEW GRAINS OFF.

***Let me tell you all something***
I have been using a 170gr bullet with 50 grains of imr 4350 which the data book told me was about 2400fts. But it turned out that it is actually going 2206 fts.

I have killed many bucks, bears, and one moose with this load, and everything was good cleaner kills.

No magnum is needed for these type of shots other than over 500yard shots.

30-30, 303 British, 8mm mauser, 30-06 can do the job any body needs for most game except the great bears.

Of course! That is almost identical to factory 30-30 and 32 Special ballistics, and there is little question as to their effectiveness.

My pet load in my 8X57 is a 180 Nosler Ballistic Tip over 52.5 gr. VV N150.
It works very well...

Kevan, Did you get that load from me? lol. :) It's my pet load in my Remington 700 "Classic" in 8x57.
The Chronograph does not lie.....just over 2800 out of my 24" tube. Groups occasionally have all 3 shots touching.

I have shot a couple of moose and a black bear with my 8x57, but with the 200 NAB at close to 2700, using N550...very decisive!

As loaded in North America, the 8x57 is positively anemic, but the Europeans load it to it's potential.
Had some Norma 196 grain factory loads that chrony'd 2665 avg......that's decent for that chambering.
Also had some Igman 198 grain SP's that were just over 2600 avg, still very respectable.

I have nothing but respect for the 8x57. It gives up very little to our 30-06.

Regards, Dave.

Yessir, I confess ! In my old VZ24 three rounds make a small ragged hole and you're right.... its moving !
I'm currently playing with another 8mm, this one is a beautiful 8mm / 06 and I'm thinking that maybe, just maybe a bit more N150 might work in it with the same bullet ?

Nice load data post dgradinaru! I love the 8x57. Nice to shoot and more than enough for deer, moose, elk, and bear. I load 200gr Accubonds in my Husqvarna hunting rifle over H4895 but I haven't had a chance to chrony them yet.

The 8x57 is about the same power as a 3006, when loaded to its full potential.

As for velocities being different than the book, that is because there is a significant variation in chambers and barrels. Some are faster than others. or, put another way, some need more powder than others.

Wartime production may not have held very close tolerances on things like bore and groove diameter, plus there were many different factories making barrels. Then, what happened to those barrels over the decades? I would expect a range of about 300 fps withe the same ammo, over a selection of old Mausers.

I have 3 target rifles that were re-barreled at the same time. the new barrels were from a well known high grade custom barrel maker. they were made at the same time from the same batch of steel stock. they were all chambered at the same time by a gunsmith using my reamer. They showed a 150 fps variation between the slowest and fasted barrel. (in 308W)

The book velocity is what they got in THEIR barrel. Your milege will vary. The book velocity is just a general reference.

I like 170gr Hornady SP with 53.5gr of 4350. It was a while ago but when I tested the ladder loads I was getting above 2500ft/s on my best groups. Different barrels test out different.

Does anyone have experience with 170 SSTs and W-748? Velocities and performance on game info would be much appreciated.
