Hi,

I've been looking into a Husqvarna in 9.3 x 57 and I'm wondering if anyone out there has any experience with this round. How about it's commercial availability? Is this basically a reload only round now a days?

Thanks

Brendan

Norma still makes ammo in a couple of weights with the heavier being the most common I think 282????

The one I had seemed to work with 270 Gn Speers. Tradex should have components and possibly ammo.

Any factory ammo I ever bought was from Epps. I didn't buy much as I much prefer to handload.

yep its real good round for the bigger stuff ive seen pics of what it will do to deer with a the right bullet .365 entry hole and a fist size exit i have one of the husqvarna 96's with a scope on it nice gun the cartridge looks alot better with a round nose though :).

im using norma alaska bullets but i think the cheaper prvi bullets would work ok too i have not played with this gun or cartridge much though when i get around to it im going to try a paper patch bullet

it is a reloaders round unless you like paying about $50 for 20 rounds

I have shot numerous games with both the X57 and the X62 (a lot more with the later) and I never saw such a thing like an orange size exit hole, unless you hit major bones.
Any 9.3 pill kills bears and moose in a blink, without damaging neither the pelt nor the meat. On deer / black bear size games, the entry hole will be quite similar to the exit one, unless you hit bones or use very lightly build jacketed bullet (which I never encountered).

The only manufacturer left for the 9.3X57 ammunition is Norma, as others previously pointed.
If you want to reload, most bullets will work fine without having to push it over it's normal velocities. You can use 8X57 cases without a problem, some even go through the trouble of resizing and trimming '06 cases. Reloading is the best option and bullet availlability is not a problem now (wasn't the case 20-15 years ago...).
Nosler Accubond tends to shoot extremely accurately with most rifles, so does the PPU ones and Speer. The only bullets I would hesitate to use while hunting are Barnes bullets, as I feel they were intended to be used at slightly higher velocities the X62 produces.

Would I be better off to go with something in 8x57, due to ammo availability? Is the 9.3x57 much better than the 8x57, to warrant the extra ammo cost?

I've been looking at two rifles recently, one in either caliber in the same ballpark price.

They're both great cartridges, but I prefer the 9.3x57 over the 8x57.

The 8x57 is way underloaded in factory ammo anyway, and is really a handloaders cartridge as well, if you want to get decent performance out of it. With handloads, it will push 200gr Accubonds, or 220gr Gamekings to velocities that will handle any NA game just fine. The 8x57 has better trajectory than the 9.3x57.

The 9.3x57 on the other hand, seems to fare best with 250's, 270's and 286's. I make my brass by simply running well lubricated 8x57 brass through Hornady dies, and off I go. No more a PITA than loading 8x57, but you shoot heavier bullets and get about 300 ft/lbs more energy from the 9.3x57 in my experience.

I too, prefer the 9.3's but the 8mm is a very good one, if you handload or buy European made ammo - even some Euro manufacturers, like PPU, have two load levels, according to both CIP and SAAMI;

called 8X57IS for the CIP (175gr @ 2545 fs / 196gr @ 2460 fs) and 8mm Mauser for the SAAMI (175gr @ 2330 fs / 196gr @ 2182 fs).
I never saw the 8X57IS form imported here; it's always the 8mm Mauser (SAAMI). Norma 8mm loaded ammo is imported, but it's cost is close to the 9.3X57.

So, the choice is yours; it's either you use expensive ammo (or el-cheapo anemic US made ammo in 8mm) or you start reloading.
Reloading for the 9.3X57 is very easy and a very good start for any newbie. The 8X57 is almost as easy to reload for, and is really at his max performance level with heavier bullets (195gr up to 220).
Brass is not a problem for both, as the 9.3X57 is based on the 8X57 case.

its a neat cartridge the 9.3x57 but theres very little load data for it norma has some but its for norma powders if i remember so you would have to look for the powder equivalent for north american powders

Just as a caution note; none of these internet loads were pressure tested and many were not even chronied. I am of those who don't believe in pushing the 9.3X57 at levels that reach the moon. There's plenty of calibers designed to handle higher pressures with plenty of shoulder to properly seat the case in the chamber.
The 9.3X57 and 9X57 loads are interchangeable, both working at pretty low pressures compared to today's standards.
.358 Win loads are also a good start for any 9.3X57 reloader. Expect velocities to be a bit less than announced for the .358, but usually on par with the X57 standard (set by Norma).
