Just picked up a Husqvarna with a mauser 98 action in 9.3x62 on a deal too good to pass up. I am looking for ammo to feed it. Has anyone seen a LGS (I am in the GTA) that carries some? I know I can order online but I'd rather support someone local. Also, does anyone have recommendations for ammo for moose in close thick timber - I do reload so options are nice.
Cheers

The PRVI stuff is the most economical and is decent ammo/bullets. Norma is a step up. Personally I reload, the PRVI 286gr at 2500fps is pretty serious medicine.

Tradex has a good selection of 9.3X62 ammo ranging from 286 gr Previ for $35/20 to 250 gr Trophy Grade Nosler for $95/20. Other brands in stock include Hornady, RWS, and Norma mostly going for upwards of $63/20. IMHO, Previ is the sleeper of the bunch, using good uniform brass with drilled flash holes, a decent bullet for the velocity, and has shot very well in the rifles that I've tried it in.

Thanks! This is my first medium bore rifle. I am eager to get out and shoot it. Thanks for the replies. Any recommendations on projectiles? Primarily moose, hogs and maybe black bear.

Speer, Nosler, PRVI, Woodleigh, Norma, anything but Hornady.

You should be aware that the Remington "core lokt" in 9.3 is actually a Hornady Interlock. The 270gr Speer has a very thin jacket, not sure I'd want to turn one loose on a moose.

OP, you need to invest in a loading setup.

Those speers looked pretty impressive in the water jug test. I think Ted has shot some big game with them, and Doug shot a walrus of all things without issue.

Exactly. The Hornady was the worst performing pill in that test.

The Hornady 270gr performed really well in the wet newspaper test conducted with the .375 bullets for whatever that is worth. Prompted me to buy some and start loading them, hopefully I can try one on a moose in the next couple days and see how it performs.

Definitely need to reload for this calibre, think of it as a very large 30-06, easy to reload. My preference is Norma 286 gr Oryx, followed by Nosler partitions, and then Woodleigh, all great projectiles IMHO. Love shooting the 9.3x62 and when you get one of those pills traveling at 2500fps with your reloads it's quite the medicine for just about anything at reasonable distances.

Close, thick timber moose? Pick any cup and core bullet for the 9.3 and you'll do fine. My most recent moose and black bear took long naps due to 9.3 Oryx bullets. I don't reload yet so I am limited to factory offerings. I wouldn't hesitate to use the Prvi on any of the critters you mention.

I "borrowed" some of the reviews from the Midway website:

Have found this product to be very accurate, 3 shot groups cloverleaves @ 75m. Using this product on several african game species anually.Found it to be extremely effective on species up to kudu although over expansion seems to be a problem. Do most of my Impala and warthog hunting with this product.Wary to use on Blue Wildebeest, Sebra, Oryx and Eland as I have experienced problems on these large, tough animals previously. Seems to be too soft, breaking up and over expansion seems to hamper penetration.

I have killed 10 head of game with this bullet now. 4 deer and 6 pronghorns, all from my 9.3X74R Ruger #1 In all cases the bullet came apart too much for my liking. In the worst case I shot a small whitetail buck running away and hit it int he spine. The bullet shattered itself and the spine, but only penetrated 5 inches.(yes, FIVE) This from a rifle and cartridge that should be good for buffalo and big bears. On the other hand, it is an outstanding practice and "Varmint" bullet because of its outstanding accuracy.

Bullet broke up on Red Stag when used in a 9.3x62 at higher velocities (WW760). Did not penetrate on the bull-shoulder shot. RWS 293 grain TUG finished the job. Would recommend for the 9.3x57 at 2100 FPS or for casual shooting in the 9.3x62. Use partition or Barnes X and other premium bullets on big game in the 9.3x62 or 9.3x64.

that ppu /prvi stuff 285gr blue box, i rekon thats where its at with factory haha, nice slow thumper round for what its intended!

ive sold my 9.3 as of this week but still have it, got like 20 woodleigh reloads to burn off this week then il send it away to new owner!

Hope ye clean 'er real nice before sending it off.

'

awww SS that is tomorrrows job, after i send the final rounds at various distance i suppose, i used it spotlighting last night for some meat on private property and used up 3 shots for 2 young deers.

sad but hapy in the same sentance.... good too see it finally sell... Damn!!!

$1k closer to returning to NZ

Nothing wrong with the factory Prvi 286 gr soft points. I've used the 270 Speers as well. Yes they open up but they work. The 286 gr Partitions work very well. Woodlieghs work great Deepest penetration may be with the 286 or 300 gr Swift A-frames. Great for heavy /dangerous game but hardly needed on a moose.

i put a 250gr woodleigh rn thru the shoulders/chest area of a 3/4 grown sambar hind the other night n she made it a good 100m leaking alot of blood before passing.

a stag i hit a tad high broadside dropped on the spot after a big thud an needed a coup de grace as first only spined.

no bullets stayed in and all shots about 60m

Sorry, cannot help you with the GTA local guns stores...
Will be sighting in my new LH Sako 85 Hunter today with Nolser 250 gr AccuBond ammo. Hope to harvest a moose with it this fall. This would work well on any moose, hog or black bear you would run across.Have taken numerous game with AccuBonds in various calibers from 6.5 to 375 since it came out and has worked very well.
I also have some Lapua 285 gr Mega ammo and Norma 285 gr Alaskan ammo to try.

Had fun with the 9.3 today!
Have a Kahles 1.5-6 power scope mounted on this Sako.
The Nosler factory ammo with the 250 gr AccuBond was putting 3 rounds into groups as small as 0.516" at 100 yards.
The Norma 285 gr Alaskan went into 1.026", with shots 1 and 3 almost cutting the same hole (at 0.073"). I pulled the second shot a little. Think that more groups with this load will prove it a winner.
The Lapua 285 gr Mega ammo went 1.406"

Now to locate that tasty young moose!
