I am looking for my winter projects and would like some info on what those experienced with this round would consider the minimum barrel length for this caliber.

I'd like to pick up a husqvarna sporter and cut and recrown it to be a more manageable bush rifle.... any suggestions woukd be appreciated....

I really like the barrel length of 22 inch as you can maintain good velocity and its not that long of a rifle, but if you want shorter 20-21 inch that would be okay. I have used a 20 inch zastava carbine and velocity was 2307 fts with a 285 with a moderate load, when I went up to the 22 inch barrel model I gained more velocity 2400/2450 fts with the same load, but each rifle depends on how tight the barrel.

Well.... considering the rifle comes with a 29.1 inch barrel, even a 22 incher would be a huge improvement!.... thanks

I'm in the exact same boat. Read an article on a forum (can't find it right now) where a gunsmith cut down barrels to various cartridges and documented the results. The average loss per inch was 20-25fps and it didn't seem too matter what cartridge it was. There was another article I recall reading where some testing was done and it was found 20" was generally the most accurate barrel length. I've decided I'll likely go 20" or 21", I just prefer shorter rifles and don't feel 50-100fps is going to make any measurable difference in the real world shooting at game.

Is this a replacement barrel? 'cos HVA barrels for the 9.3X62 are 600mm, or 23.62".
Most of my rifles (other than HVA) in 9.3X62 have a 22" barrel. As bore diameter increase, usually the velocity loss for each inch cut down is less than whit "smal bore" (,30 and less).

Well, the M/98 have a 3.310"/3.0315" magazine while the M/94/96/38 have a 3.240" (for the M46/46A) and of 3.260" for the M/649.
But other than that, if you respect the beast, both will render what they were made for.
