Looking for a larger caliber bush rifle.

Really impressed with the fit and handling of the CZ550FS in 9.3x62 & the Marlin 1895 lever in 45-70.

My main question is the difference in performance of the 45-70 and the 9.3x62 caliber. Comments I am looking for is the advantages in hunting and overall performance, not the advantage of it availability at Canadian Tire..:p

Rifle will be used for bear & deer

With either caliber I will be reloading.

Thanks

d.

either/or. You wanna bolt gun or a lever?
Well : One is a bolt and the other is a lever. As far as the comparison goes in the bush under 100 yds the 45/70 wins. But if you have to do any longer shots the 9.3 wins. I would go for the CZ in 9.3. The only thing I don't like about it is the weight.

As much as I like the 45-70, the 9.3x62 would be a superior cartridge (unless you're shooting at less than 150 yards). If you're in thick bush, the 45-70 in the Marlin is tough to beat (and very handy).

My suggestion: Get one of each!

I wouldn't put these in the same league, the 45/70 is much more effective on large animals, with it's bigger bore and heavier bullets. The edge may go to the various 9.3s for longer shots, but alot of that is overblown as most shots are within 125yds. The Euro 9.3s are just a fad that will pass, like gall stones.

A "fad" that will pass? The 9.3 has been around for well over a 100 yrs. At 150 yds the 45/70 is on it's second bounce. I sold my 9.3x62 last year (DUMB) I have a 9.3x57 and it works very well.

Good advice.

The other thing to consider is that components for the 9.3x62 are not as abundant or available.

I find your lack of faith disturbing...........

Both have been around for quite some time and I would hate for either to dissappear anytime soon. They have their place, each of them. If I hunted close cover all the time and liked levers it would be the 45-70.

If I hunt mixed terrain where long shots are possible then I'd be packing a 9,3x62. Oh hold on...... I WILL be packing a 9,3! :)

Put that phaser setting on 9.3x62.

Jarrod, what the heck! Did you hit your head at work today?
I must not be reading the sarcasm here.

Truth be known, you were the second biggest influence on me to get a 9,3!
Who was you're first?

My darn Speer manual teased me with the 9,3 ever since I bought it in '93.

M1garandfather certainly wasn't any help either!

And soon enough Noel is going to start a 9,3 versus chrony defense thread :p :D

That will be a much more interesting thread than this one

Sorry Noel, have I put enough salt in the wound yet?:D

With testing I've done so far, the 7mm is a much better choice to kill a chrony.

Not to worry Dave, what goes around come around. Barrel chopper!:p
