9.3x62 Fans ?

I haven't owned a 9.3X62 but I tried to get one in an older Sako for years(would complete my metric set along with the 6.5X55 and 7X64!) After giving that up, I was hoping to get a Cooper Custom Classic but they haven't been able to get it chambered yet. :(
However, I do have a nice CZ American in stock(actually, two but one is much better wood) . I do have a #1 in 9.3X74R that should perform about the same, of course.
As I get older, velocity is losing its appeal and a classic larger caliber at a moderate velocity appeals more and more to me. I think the 9.3X62 in some rifle will be a big part of my hunting future in a big way. :)

Don't forget your 10,75x68, 11.2 Shuler and .......:p I know a few places you could shop at, and I also know this guy who can get them up here.....oh wait..

Just about to install and glass bed a rear bolt ferrule in a Husky FN 98 9.3x62 as it didn't have one and I want to strengthen the stock in case it splits.Havn't shot it yet but have all the compoments ready to go.It came with side saftey Timney and the 4screw military floor plate .Both capture screws missing. That I'm not too thrilled with. Also weaver bases installed purchased from Trade -Ex a month or so ago.Want to make sure it's ready before shooting it.Will be putting a 4X Leupold as it's for general use.......Harold

LOL, true, I've heard that.
Sorry, for the metrics, I meant the three that Sako chambered from about 1986 to 1996 (which are the style I prefer and own over 30)

My toss up is whether to use a vintage side mount like a G&H or to have a Suhler claw style put on. Side mount would be better to keep a clear view of the irons. Neither are cheap or readily available but it seems both styles were used. Hmmm.......

LOL Funny how the 9.3X62 has generated so much interest of late. I have too many in this caliber but find it performs above it's paygrade so to speak. I own or have owned Tikka T3, Husqvarna 1600 and 649(FN 98), custom barreled FN 98 with a Heym tube, and the elusive Sako AV in this caliber. They all shoot good with max charges of RL 15 and 286 Hornady or Noslers. Also, I don't find they kick that bad. Even the Tikka Battue with a Limbsaver pad is very comfortable to shoot in my opinion. Like Noel said, being able to fit in a standard 98 action with 4 or 5 down creates a potent package. Makes me wonder why I just bought a 375 Ruger!!

Seems some of the European Chamberings are getting more popular up here, I think The Cheap swedish imports have helped....Thanks Anthony.

Typical Gunnut... I seem to have the same affliction...it led me to buy a 9.3 and start this thread :D

9.3x57 vs 9.3x62

Question: are you giving up much performance going with 9.3x57 instead of 9.3x62? I'm sitting on a ton of 8x57 brass and it looks like its pretty easy to resize for 9.3x57 and bjork bjork bjork as the Swedish Chef would say.

MauserMike you are certainly giving up a bit of performance with the x57 especially in a newer rifle as I push the 286's in the x57 to 2070fps and to 2450 in my x62's, however the x57 is a nice chambering and fun rifle in its own right and with speer 270's its just about perfect for a walk in the woods. Get one too!

Sizing 8x57 to 9.3x57 would be easier with Hornady dies as they have a more tappered expander than say RCBS does.................................Harold *****seems to be some controversy requarding making 9.3x62 out of 30-06 brass re feeding problems and differing base measurements? Don't know havn;t tried bought 100 Lapau instead

One of my favorites - A very effective round especially in the 286 gr bullets.
I have used it on some big guys and they went down liek the hammer of Thor hit them.

I like the Norma Oryx, Partition, Speer, and the TSX. Many guides in Africa swear by the 9.3 x 62 with the 286 gr TSX for penetration on the heavy stuff.

They even don't hesitate for one second to go after elephants with that combination.

Again, a hundred year old "new" cartridge that just works and works without fuss nor muss.

Call me crazy but I say not a whole lot.
In a MODERN rifle that can take the high pressure compare the 7x57 to the 280 Remington. With proper handloads you can come within 150 FPS of the 280 which isn't that big a difference.

Same goes for 8x57 to 8mm-06.

You should be able to do the same with a 9,3x57 compared to a 9,3x62.

And yes, pass the chicken. Bjorky bjork bork york.

The new Hornady dies has a light thread on the sizer rod so it won't slip anymore. They work very slick with a minimal amount of lube. You may elect to neck it to 375 and then neck size only enough to chamber to get a proper fireform. Some chambers can vary and have more headspace than one would like. This way the smallish shoulder can hold its own under the strikers impact.

Harold, for entertainment value I measured more than a few virgin Norma cases for the 9,3x62 and the came up the same dia as my 06 brass it. Keep in mind again you would have to over size the neck to get the shoulder moved forward but I think a guy could get away with it. Other brands may be different.

Just something I came across on a US site.I think they made an American version on a 06 case Schoville or something.I'm not an authority on this just a recent fan.Been shooting/hunting over 40 years now.Love the 6.5x55 as well.Killed a bunch of moose with that one...................Harold

Mauser 98? I wouldn't want to overload one of the many M96's chambered in this size.
