9 mm revolver?

no it's not just you- police forces for years carried the 38 spcl in 4 inch and the popularity was what got it PROHIBITED- the 4 inch in 38/357 is a perfect "balance" if you know what i mean- you'll find the 6 inch "barrel heavy" , so you trade off for that longer sigght radius- the only diff between the 38 spcl and the 357 is about 1/10th of an inch or so, and savvy reloaders use 357 casings so they don't have a "crud ring" to clean out after shooting- ie 38 spcl loads in 357 casings-

Well, my Ruger is in just waiting for the final $tab. I just ordered Pachmayr grips for it to see if that makes the beast more manageable. My cost was around $655 plus shipping and 13% HST so I'm trying to chisel him down on shipping! See how that goes. Get laid off end of the next week so maybe can try it out than. All I have is FMJ 9mm and lead .38 Spl. to try in it.

Seems like us people in N.B. are all on UIC according to the news: http://www.nationalpost.com/news/life+frustrates+Minister/5736752/story.html Never been on it myself, must give it a go! I want to be cool and if everyone else is doing it I must have to so I can be cool!

Is that your Ruger GP100 that your referring too?

I have a 6" GP100 but it is not a convertable. I have ordered and now paid for a 6" New Model Black Hawk Convertable and am awaiting CFC approval for shipping etc. I was kind of hoping that the grips would fit the Super Black Hawk as well but they will not. I find that the cowboy gun's grips leave a little to be desired when shooting, especially the .44 Mag. The Pachmayr grips will have traditionalist people twisting in their graves but I'm hoping that they give a better hold on the pistol. In my world the .44 Mag is a fearsom SOB to shoot, but I have only shoot about 40 rounds through it and all using the bench to hold the gun still, no free hand! But I'm a pussy, there I said it!

Waiting for the new gun, feels like Christmas!

A while back, at a gun show in Naniamo I acquired a SS Ruger Blackhawk Convertable, 45ACP/45LC.

If I was to get a revolver that I could use 9mm in, I'd go for something the same again.

Thinking about this thread, I 'thought' I recalled a shooting buddy having a double action revolver in 9mm. He did have. A S&W model 940 Centenial with a 2" barrel and five shot I believe and apparently it had some sort of a 'clip' set up for case extraction.

In the 80's, a lot of surplus S&W 9mm revolvers came out of Israel, I remember the Gunrunner had ads for them around $250.00
I have a box of Gunrunners around here, brings a tear to my eye when I look through them.

Your memory is good Puma, they were the S&W 547. I picked up a couple in Calgary from the fellow that went over and bought them. How many did you buy?

Got a nice package in the mail today. Faster than I expected. I can't post a picture as I don't really have a picture hosting site that works for me. I think the grips are a little cheap looking but have new ones coming. Be a little while till I get out to shoot this baby! I'm working till at least Sat. and we are in the middle of a big story these parts.

Half assed range report!

I took the revolver to the range and shot over 100 rounds through it. For me it was a bit more accurate in 9mm but I think I may have been trying harder in 9mm to prove a point! The gun is still new and needs more range time. At 50 yards free hand I hit the target once with 38S and twice with 9mm. At 15 yards free hand (I was squatted down with both elbows on my kneew so not really free hand) I hit more and better with the 9mm but not bullseyes. I was shooting to the right and low but the groups were a bit better in 9mm. The 9mm has more kick and is louder than .38 special and the .38 was a heavier bullet. The .38 was a 158 grain SWC lead and the 9mm was a 115 grain FMJ. I have spent about an hour trying to get Google's photo sharing site Picasa to show my photos and no luck so I have given it up as a bad idea! Bottom line, I'm still a s**tty shot but make a lot of noise and spend lots of $$ on smoke and holes in paper. I think I like the GP100 a little better as it is easier to load than a SA and I like SSteel. The .38 bullet will not fit in a 9mm cylinder and same for 9mm in .38 cylinder. I'm waiting for the new Pachmayr grip I ordered and will see how much improvemnt that gives. The SA grips leave a little to be desired.

There is nothing wrong with the gun and it is nice to be able to shoot 9mm or .38/.357 in the same pistol. Plus you don't lose the cases in the snow.

I had to go back 6 pages to find this topic! The forum is full of topics/posts like "I bought a Glock...and now I feel like a girl" LOL

I installed the Pachmayr grips called presentation grips, not like the GP100 grips. They feel real nice in my large hands. I took the Blackhawk, the GP100 and my STI .45 out the the range (with the GSG 1911 of course!). Sadly I forgot the 9mm cylinder. I could find no accuracy difference between the GP100 and the Blackhawk, for that matter the 0.45ACP was about the same as well. I'm talking me shooting so were not talking about 2 inch groups at 50 yards here! I did most of my shooting at 20 yards. The smallest groups came from the .22LR but the rest were about the same. I was shooting factory .38 special lead SWC rounds. If I can I'll add a picture of the Blackhawk (link in above post) with the new grips. They install easyly.

Little update. I started reloading my own rounds for the first time. I loaded some .38S+p rounds and for the hell of it did some 9mm. I took the reloads and the convertable to the range. I could not tell the difference between my +p middle of the power range reloads and the factory stuff that was not +p. I tried the 9mm and I was able to get 2/6 to fire and this was 3 cylinder loads each the same. I ended up with a light hammer strike on the 9mm. The factory 9mm worked great. I took the FTF reload rounds and put them in my Browning HP and they would all fire. So I got home and discovered that the Ruger Convertable cylinder in the wheel is tapered. The reloads I had done I placed the final die a bit too deep and tapered the very tip of the brass onto the lead. This difference between factory of 9.56 vs. 9.51 mm was enough for my reloads to go to deep in the wheel cylinder. This is not an issue for revolver brass as there is a lip but auto brass has no lip. Thought this may interest someone on Christmas Eve, if you have no life like me!
