Hi guys,

This is what I've been working on the last week or so. It took me about 6 or 7 hours total to modify the synthetic stock that came with my Savage 93R17-FV. I wasn't quite happy with the cheek weld, so I fabricated my own raised cheek rest out of 1/4" ABS plastic and threw some Cadpat/Marpat style paint on there; completed by cutting out my own templates and overlapping several layers with Krylon Camo.

The end result isn't perfect, but not bad for an extremely low $ and time budget!

Looks awesome. how exactly did you make that cheek riser?

Got a 12"x12" scrap piece of 1/4" thick ABS plastic from a local plastic shop (only cost $5), drew out a symmetrical shape on it with a sharpie, and cut the shape out with a band saw.

The next step is the hardest (it is actually pretty easy, but also easy to screw up): I mounted a pipe in my vice then slowly heated the center of the plastic piece with a paint stripper heat gun to the point that the plastic was a bit flexible, and bent the plastic over the mounted pipe. I had the stock on the bench as well to test fit as the plastic was still a bit soft.

It is important to not get the tip of the heat gun too close to the plastic; better to go slow and steady while heating up the plastic, rather than risk smoking it. Also, it's good to wear work gloves as it gets pretty hot.

If I were to do it again I would probably go for a slightly thinner piece of plastic as it would be more forgiving and easier to form.

ABS plastic is pretty easy to paint, although it must be acrylic. Krylon with "Fusion", which is what their camo paints have in it, works very well on the ABS after a quick suffing and degreasing.

Haha, yes I did use drywall screws! Mostly because that's what I had on hand and they look blued. I'll probably keep my eyes open for something better.

Here are the templates I used. I printed this out on a full sheet a couple of times and pasted them to cereal box type cardboard. Once the glue dried I just zipped out the patterns with an x-acto knife. Since I printed it out a couple of times, I made quite a few templates, changing up the pattern a bit on the fly.

Wow that looks great. I have the same rifle and I'm always having trouble getting a good weld on the stock. I also just painted mine. Turned out well

That looks awesome man. I was considering one of those strap on, pouch type buttstock things to get a better weld but what I ended up with is cheaper and I think a bit nicer.
